Have any of you out there been back to the old forts, York, Henry and Chambley in the Soest area? If so how about giving us a low-down on that trip down memory lane. There were other forts but these three were the most used by the RCR or as far as I remember.

I myself was back there about 4 years ago.

Fort Chambley I couldn't find Fort Chambley, the roads and trails have all changed and frankly my memory of that place was not all that clear.

Fort Henry was all grown over, trees growing through the roads and the like but I did have a chance to talk to the care taker and he said that it was last used as a refugee camp for the Yugoslavia problem. It also used, when the British Armored Troup’s were being moved to the Golf for the first Golf War.
Remember the little bar on the curve just before getting to Fort Henry (The Green Lantern maybe)? Well the road has been straightened out the bar is gone.

Fort York is still there and there but not as we knew it. There is a German Mobile missile Group there now. They were very nice to me and when they found out that I was one of the RCR that had been there in the sixties, gave me the royal treatment. No Camera were allowed however so I have no pic’s. The camp is different though. The Theater and Hockey Rink went to the civilian population but the rest is still being used by the military. When the wife and I left they returned my cameras and the whole guard came out to give me a General Salute. It made me feel pretty good.

However the biggest differences were in Soest its self. You would have to see it to believe. Many of the bars and hangouts are gone or changed, the Black Raven closed, the Lantern now a Greek restaurant and too many others to mention. Then again when a town looses some 3000 Canadian beer drinkers it is bound to make a difference to the  Bars and clubs.

Anyway let’s hear your stories. Remember no post is wrong, just different and that is what makes the site glow with the old RCR spirit. I remember a time when after two beers I couldn’t get a word in edge-wise with most of you guys, so if you can’t think of anything to say, say it anyway, that's what you did in the past.

Hi Ken, both my children were born in Germany my daughter was born at the BMH in 66 and my son was born in Korbecke in 67. There are pictures of the BMH on the web but none that I can find in Korbecke. Have a good one. By the way I was in B Coy in Germany from 65 to 68.

Yes, Don I know that you were in B company. Do you still sing, play cards and do the "That's twice" thing. You and Doug were always together and raising cane, that is if you could still raise anything by the end of the night. hehehehe

Thanks Doug this is a great site to go down memory lane with. Whoever this person is I would like to thank them too. Great Pictures. I was at the end when The troops were moving south, put into a Bus Monitor job ( because I spoke German and all of the bus drivers only spoke German) to get the kids to school safely so many of these pics had more meaning to me then some others. But I recommend it to anyone.

Hi Ken ,I was just reading though the old posts and came across this one ,I went back to Fort York in I believe it was 75 ,I was on a shooting team shooting for the "Belgium Cup",it was only a long wk. affair so didn't get to much time to look around We stayed in the old anti tank barracks I believe it was just across the road from the old 'B Coy" lines. the inside of the barracks had changed a lot [all single rooms] but I did get a chance to walk around the old place,We ate in what used to be the Sgt's mess I believe it was a kind of a all ranks "pub restuant".We shot on the old Belgium range [remember that place Doug?]and We had a fancy awards ceremony in one of the big halls down by the dam.I know what you mean about Soest changing alot,I was the unofficial guide and I couldn't fine bugger all in down town Soest,I did fine Fort Chambly[I was lost at the time!!].Idf I remember right they had taken the bell tower off one of the churchs because they only had one service there any more[Doug I looked in the ditdh in front of the churchs to see if any of YOUR friends where still there but I guess they had all gone to te shacks by then.Oh yes one thing a lot of you guys won't be sorry to hear the old 'Bismark tower" as we caled it was long gone there was a four lane road running though there not that any of us could run a 10 miler any more.Oh ya one more thing ,out side this big beer hall We had the fancy ceremony at was a real nice carin with a big plaque to all the Canadians that had served in the area etc.etc. Wel I guess that's enough for this time as my fingers are sore

Amazing to find what Google can show me, a direct link to a forum I am on. I was afraid of resurrecting and old thread, but bah, what the heck. I was born in that hospital in Körbecke in 68. Here I was trying to get more info so I can get a single piece of paper for Birth Certificate/Citizenship instead of dragging around 37 year old papers for german birth record and a "Certificate of Registration of Birth Abroad" (Try explaining to Canada Customs on a return from the USA on a shopping trip that YES I am a Canadian citizen for *&$%*&$ sakes....)

But yeah, my searches brought up the association site link. Cool. My dad, Keith Lorne Davis, was C-Coy I believe at that time...
