Fort York - 2 RCR 67-70 * 1 RCR Recce 70-74
|
Have any of you out there been back to the old forts, York, Henry and Chambley in the Soest area? If so how about giving us a low-down on that trip down memory lane. There were other forts but these three were the most used by the RCR or as far as I remember.
I myself was back there about 4 years ago.
Fort Chambley I couldn't find Fort Chambley, the roads and trails have all changed and frankly my memory of that place was not all that clear.
Fort Henry was all grown over, trees growing through the roads and the like but I did have a chance to talk to the care taker and he said that it was last used as a refugee camp for the Yugoslavia problem. It also used, when the British Armored Troup’s were being moved to the Golf for the first Golf War. Remember the little bar on the curve just before getting to Fort Henry (The Green Lantern maybe)? Well the road has been straightened out the bar is gone.
Fort York is still there and there but not as we knew it. There is a German Mobile missile Group there now. They were very nice to me and when they found out that I was one of the RCR that had been there in the sixties, gave me the royal treatment. No Camera were allowed however so I have no pic’s. The camp is different though. The Theater and Hockey Rink went to the civilian population but the rest is still being used by the military. When the wife and I left they returned my cameras and the whole guard came out to give me a General Salute. It made me feel pretty good.
However the biggest differences were in Soest its self. You would have to see it to believe. Many of the bars and hangouts are gone or changed, the Black Raven closed, the Lantern now a Greek restaurant and too many others to mention. Then again when a town looses some 3000 Canadian beer drinkers it is bound to make a difference to the Bars and clubs.
Anyway let’s hear your stories. Remember no post is wrong, just different and that is what makes the site glow with the old RCR spirit. I remember a time when after two beers I couldn’t get a word in edge-wise with most of you guys, so if you can’t think of anything to say, say it anyway, that's what you did in the past.

Sorry I almost forgot:
If any of you got Married and had children in the little German Hospital in Korbecke near the Mohnesee, well it is still there but is now an old age full care home.
Amazing to find what Google can show me, a direct link to a forum I am on. I was afraid of resurrecting and old thread, but bah, what the heck. I was born in that hospital in Körbecke in 68. Here I was trying to get more info so I can get a single piece of paper for Birth Certificate/Citizenship instead of dragging around 37 year old papers for german birth record and a "Certificate of Registration of Birth Abroad" (Try explaining to Canada Customs on a return from the USA on a shopping trip that YES I am a Canadian citizen for *&$%*&$ sakes....) But yeah, my searches brought up the association site link. Cool. My dad, Keith Lorne Davis, was C-Coy I believe at that time...
