Hello All, I contacted Ben Gilmore in Singapore, where he now resides, and asked about "The Hairy Anticipator" this is his reply: "This drink, or as you more aptly named it 'concoction', came into existence one Happy Hour in the Fort York Officers Mess, around 1965. A bunch of us worked on the contents and I think Sandy McQuarrie came up with the name. If I recall, it was basically a shot of everything in the bar until a beer glass was full. With just enough sweet liqueur included to give it a harmless, soda-shop taste. One of those usually guaranteed an early bed-time, although I did see a big American, from the local missile battery, drink two one night and somehow stay with the party. It was normally an initiation drink, as few people, who watched it being thrown together, would dare to drink it!!" So now we know the rest of the story. Cheers, Hugh Conway

I was one of the "bunch" that Ben Gilmore reports as having concocted the Hairy Anticipator. I can add a couple of details that Ben omitted. Once the recipe had been settled, Al Itenson, who was a cartoonist of some note drew a sketch of the Hairy Anticipator (a rather cute fantasy creature) and the recipe was detailed on the back. The whole thing was framed and hung on the wall of the bar with the notice that anyone who could drink a Hairy Anticipator in its entirety would get a second one free. Although it never stipulated it, most people assumed it had to be chug-a-lugged (deadly). One of the officers, Des Dean, was another person who drank two, on more than one occasion. He just dragged it out over a couple of hours, and then claimed his second one. The demise of the Anticipator came during a Mess Dinner, at which the Brigade Surgeon was in attendance. The Anticipator was mixed up for someone and the surgeon asked what was in it. When he read the recipe, he personally forbade the CO to allow it to be consumed in the Mess as, in his opinion, there was enough alcohol in it to cause alcohol poisoning. The last time I saw the Anticipator it was hanging in the 2RCR Mess in Gagetown.
