Dear Sir(s)/Madam(s),
I don't know if this is appropriate for this thread, but my family is trying to get information on my cousin, Jack Mancuso.
The story:
I have another cousin (Sheila) who is researching the family tree. When she was in Sault Ste. Marie, she discovered that our cousin (hers and mine), John (Jack) Mancuso, was buried in a welfare plot (with another indegent person), with no marker. She was very close to him in childhood, so was concerned about this. She knew that he served in the Korean War, so she felt that there must be some way to get at least a proper headstone for him from the government. She didn't contact me ( I retired after having served 30 years in the Navy), so she had to phone several places to finally find The Last Post Fund. It was more than a year since his death (1976) at the time, but she somehow convinced them to provide a headstone. A photo of the headstone is included below. John Mancuso's family pretty well disowned him when he came back from Korea because he had a lot of problems. That is how he ended up in a welfare plot. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder wasn't known in those days, so I guess he eventually sank into deep depression. My cousin, Sheila, The one doing the family tree, recently told me the story. It was unknown to me until that time. She said that he came to stay at her and her husbands home after returning from Korea because he'd worn out his welcome with his immediate family.
After chasing a bunch of dead ends, I contacted The Last Post Fund (after obtaining his case number from Sheila). The person at The Last Post Fund I contacted had actually worked on his case and said that he was a Private in the RCR (details below). I searched among the available records on this website and didn't find his name mentioned anywhere. I spoke with Mr. Bingeman, here in Windsor, who directed me to RCR HQ, Their archives are presently in Ottawa for update. My main reason for wanting the truth is to let my family, and more importantly his immediate family, know the real story. If he came home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, it may give them a new understanding of him. He has a daughter and granddaughter who have disowned him and are ashamed of him. Armed with the truth, perhaps he can be rightfully restored to a place of understanding and honour in their eyes.
This is the information given to me by The Last Post Fund:
Private John R. Mancuso, (went by Jack) Service # B801168 Enlisted 17 Aug 50 Discharged 24 Aug 52 Served in Japan and Korea
This is a photo of him upon returning from Korea:

His cap badge is apparently RCR, so I hope this is the right place.
This is his headstone in Sault Ste-Marie, ON:

If anyone recognizes him, could you please let me know so that I can give his family the truth (if appropriate) and perhaps enter his name in The Last Post on this website. His National Archive record won't be availale to the family until November 2006.
Thank you very much. Michael Hogan LCdr (retired) Windsor, ON

LCdr Hogan, I know this thread has been dormant for quite a while, but:
B801168 Pte JR Mancuso is listed on a nominal roll I found at RHQ for the 2nd Battalion, The RCR, in Korea (1951).
