A ROYAL CANADIAN "NEVER PASSES A FAULT"

Ed Duffney, Royal Canadian
« on: July 10, 2008, 04:55:11 AM »

A nice profile in today's London Free Press on every Royal's favourite Newfoundlander.

Well done, Eddy.

Name: Ed Duffney

Occupation: Retired soldier

Age: 72

Profile: Ed Duffney made his life's work to raise money helping others. Born in West Bay, Nfld. in 1936, Duffney joined the army in 1957 and moved to London the same year to serve in the infantry. But it wasn't until 1972, when he was on a second tour in Germany, that Duffney discovered his real calling. While stationed with his family overseas, he decided it was time to raise some money so that children of military families abroad could play minor hockey. His early efforts were a huge success, and on returning to London he went to work at the Royal Canadian Regiment Museum. Duffney spent 17 years guiding thousands of students through the museum and organizing massive fundraising events to help the museum pay for renovations and showcase displays. One such project was Operation Gold Wall, in which donors paid $200 for a memorial gold brick in the wall of the museum. Gold Wall continues to this day, and Duffney's pet project has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the museum. For his outstanding efforts, Duffney was awarded the Order of Military Merit in 1985, and today organizes an annual Canada Day veterans' memorial parade in London. The parade continues a Newfoundland tradition, a Canada Day parade honouring members of a famous regiment who lost their lives in a July 1, 1916 First World War battle.

Motivation: He began fundraising because he wanted to see his kids play hockey; things snowballed from there.

Quote: "It was a way of life for me, I helped everybody out. That's what I did my whole life."

Just got back from the sergeants mess in London, lads.

Ed was at the Pachino Day soireee and looking damn fine considering his, ah, advanced age ;-)

Actually, he looked more like 62!

Anyhow, I wished I would have seen your words as I could have relayed them to him.

I wonder if Ed knows where this site is?

Someone in London should give him the heads up so he can read what was said.
