A ROYAL CANADIAN "NEVER PASSES A FAULT"
|
Well done... sir!
Chief of Defense Staff commends Miramichi-born soldier Published Monday June 16th, 2008
An army officer from Miramichi has earned the praise of Canada's top soldier.
Lieutenant Colonel Ron Allison, originally from St. Margaret's, recently received the Chief of Defence Staff's commendation from General Rick Hillier in Halifax.
The commendation recognizes Allison's service as Commander of Task Force Addis Ababa.
His duties involved acting as a strategic advisor to the African Union Headquarters mission in war-torn Darfur, making sure the AU soldiers deployed in Sudan and Darfur had the necessary resources and support.
The biggest part of his job, he said, was assisting the African Unions preparations to hand over the operation to the United Nations on Dec. 31, 2007.
The inscription on the commendation reads:
For exceptional leadership while serving as Commander of Task Force Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia and Sudan, June to December 2007. He worked tirelessly with Canadian diplomats to accurately identify and resolve difficult issues and see to Canadian interests, all the while ensuring security of his personnel in a dangerous and forbidding environment.
"I am very proud of the inscription," Allison said, adding he felt very honoured to have been recognized by General Hillier.
Allison was born in Chatham and grew up at the former Canadian Forces radar station in St. Margaret's. He graduated from James M. Hill Memorial High School in 1972, where, as a young man, he played hockey with the Tommies and baseball with the Ironmen.
His father, the late Wendell Allison, came from Trout Brook. His mother is Elva Allison (originally a Sobey) from Maple Glen.
"I have very strong roots with the Miramichi," he said.
His mother, who now lives in Moncton, said she was very pleased about the commendation.
"It's fantastic," she said. "I'm pretty proud of him."
She added that Allison's four brothers and his sister were also all very proud. One of Allison's brothers, Don, was a former city manager in Miramichi.
Elva described the Chief of Defense Staff as "a very, very nice man."
Allison, an infantry officer with The Royal Canadian Regiment, has been in the Canadian Forces for 33 years and has completed tours of duty all over the world. He is presently the Chief of Staff and Commanding Officer of 37 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters for New Brunswick and Newfoundland.
He lives with his wife, Ruth, in Moncton, and has two grown daughters, Jennifer and Robin, who live in Calgary and Halifax respectively.
Allison says that although he left the Miramichi area at 21, he still considers himself a Miramichi boy at heart.
