1 RCR commander prepares to deploy

After just one year on the job, Colonel Joseph Shipley handed command of the first Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment (1 RCR) to Lieutenant Colonel Conrad Mialkowski Thursday.

The ceremony was held at CFB Petawawa amidst family, friends and fellow soldiers.

The change comes as Col. Shipley is set to deploy to Afghanistan this summer as the commander of the Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) for Task Force 3-08.

As commanding officer at 1 RCR, Col. Shipley oversaw the reintegration of soldiers returning from a seven-month deployment to Kandahar, Afghanistan in February, 2007. During that mission, nine soldiers were killed and several dozen were wounded.

Incoming commanding officer Lt.-Col. Mialkowski, previously the battalion's operations officer who was in charge of Echo Company, will aid the training of 221 soldiers who will deploy as part of the OMLT in September. His previous operational experience included a tour to Bosnia in 2003.

Saying goodbye to his soldiers, Col. Shipley also thanked his wife and two children for their support during the past year.

Col. Dean Milner, Commander of the 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, oversaw the ceremonial signing-over of command and inspected the battalion before addressing the crowd.

"It's not just about us, it's about the families that stand behind us," Col. Milner said. "I don't know who feels more stressed (during a deployment), the families or the soldiers."

Chief Warrant Officer Stu Hartnell also took over the position of Regimental Sergeant Major from Chief Warrant Officer Mark Miller, who will also be heading to Afghanistan.

The objective of the OMLT is to train members of the Afghan National Army and Afghan police. Currently, Base Petawawa is training over 2,000 troops for a six-month deployment to Kandahar scheduled to begin in September.

Along with the OMLT, the contingent will include a battle group from the Third Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment (3RCR), a Provincial Reconstruction Team from 2 Combat Engineer Regiment and a National Support Element.
