I received this answer from my MP today
From: Dhalla, Ruby - M.P. Date: 5/29/2008 1:11:24 PM To: reedj@rogers.com Subject: Canadian Flag at Half-mast
May 29, 2008
Dear Jesse Reed,
Thank you for your letter concerning the policy on lowering the Canadian flag on the Peace Tower. It is always a pleasure to hear from constituents in regards to important issues such as this.
The Liberal Party regrets the minority Conservative government’s position not to lower the flag on Parliament Hill to half-mast and to hold a moment of silence if the House is in session after the demise of a member of the Canadian Forces or Canadian Government personnel serving overseas in a peacekeeping, peacemaking or humanitarian mission - despite a majority vote in Parliament supporting this.
I believe this gesture is an opportunity to commend the sacrifice and courage of those that serve on behalf of our great nation.
I believe that lowering the flag on Parliament Hill to half-mast is a small but poignant symbol that would serve to recognize the ultimate sacrifice our Canadian men and women make who have served Canada with pride and honour. It is unfortunate that the Conservative Government has ignored the will of Parliament.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to write me about this issue. Please do not hesitate to contact my office if I can be of any further assistance.
Kind Regards,
Dr. Ruby Dhalla,
Member of Parliament, Brampton-Springdale
Opposition Critic for Social Development
