Cyprus 1986 March - October
« on: February 10, 2006, 08:31:23 PM »

Year:1986
Location: Nicosia Cyprus
Battalion: The Third
Company: November

Pte's Jack gaudet and Pete St. Denies are just arriving bacl from a foor patrol along the buffer zone.

I had left Winnipeg during a blowing Blizzard on the 5th of March with just a little over a yaer and a half in the army, and arrived in a balmy Cyprus what seemed an etiernity later.

Training in Canada had been an experience, but travel to this distant and new land with the prospects of future travel, for me was the real hook to keep me resigning those engagement  contracts.

It more than made up for the frozen toes in Shilo, or picking up cigarette butts before I became a smoker.

Okay, now here comes the Challenge part.  I know most of the guys in this photo, though as a private back then, they were known to me as Sir; CSM's; WO's; and Sgt's, not "just guys". Smiley
Since front row / back row might be hard to do here, and going clockwise around the table would not only confuse me, but maybe a few of you as well... let's start on visible faces going from left to right.
The gentleman on the left (back against the US flag), was a Lt. and my 5 Platoon Commander; next (with the cap) my Section Sgt (who left the tour early and the military, to teach small arms to the RCMP in NFLD; next face to the right is / was my Pl WO; then (with the VRI shirt) I'm not certain; next (with mouth open and  likely yelling Air Bourne) and regrettably a departed comrade, was the CSM of N-Coy; behind him and to the right, (again I'm uncertain), and finally the fellow leaning against the right border of my photograph, the PL WO for either 6 or 7 PL.
So, from left to right, numbered from 1 to 7, does anyone want to take a go at naming this crew?

Hi Brian

They are all "just guys" to me. Maybe it's the way you look at them?

Grin... True enough Jim.  How I looked at things during my second year in as a private and the way I see things and people now are completely different.  When I'm no longer serving, I'll likely have yet another view, more like fond memories in a reminiscent sort of way.
But for a pte / cpl to say to their Sgt., "Hey Bud", in my belief, still requires immediate and corrective action to  be taken, as a whole army of "Hey buds", would undermine any authority and control that may one day be required on a battlefield.
Time and distance affords me the leisure of looking at these fellows as "Guys" now, but when I put the beret on and get to work, "Sir", "Sgt" and "WO", are, and for the foreseeable future, will be part of my daily lingo. Smiley

Hi Brian

I didn't know you were still serving and I say ["just guys"] to me. I don't have to worry about having to serve again and after 37 1/2 yrs who wants too. It's too much fun to be retired! Now don't get mad, Grin. Pro Patria.

Grin... I need to change my profile picture to a happy looking one. Smiley
I find myself looking over to the photo at the left, when I'm reading a post, as if it Will somehow tell me the mood of the writer.  That's weird, isn't it.
I think that why I wrote "Grin" at the beginning of my previous post, cause I didn't want the wrong emotion read into it, as that's so easy to do online.
Nope, wasn't getting mad Smiley  The only thing that really makes me unhappy in the military is when my OT transfer application never reaches its intended destination, like the one I submitted last summer.  They just found it this January, in a file cabinet at ASU HQ, with big bold letters on the font of the file which read, "Must be forwarded to Ottawa no later than 06 Oct 2005. :{
Other than this happening three times over the past couple decades, I'm usually a pretty happy go lucky guy. Smiley

Hi, I was there during that tour, these gents were with Line East and I was with Line West but I do know some of the guys.  In the bottom picture I believe #7 is Bucky Buchanon, #6 is "Hippy" Hipson our KO/cook, unfotunately we lost him shortly after coming back from Cyprus.  #5 is Bob Hodgens(sp)another departed comrad.  The rest are familiar  but I can't put a name to, I'll have to pull out my Cyprus yearbook.

In the top picture I remember a Jack Gaudet but he was a cpl and didn't look anything like the guy on the left, unless of course there were two Jack Gaudets.

We did have two Jack Gaudets, I remember the other one (older) too.  This fellow is a Newf I beleive and likes Jack Danniels. Peter St. Denies (spelling) is the guy on th right in the top photo.  He made Sgt. in record time, a very smart and energetic fellow.  Got out and joined the OPP, and went up fast there too. Smiley

Bottom Photo:
At the time:
Lt. Prentice (5pl Cmdr)
Sgt. Lou Kendall (Got out to teach the mounties small arms in NFLD)
WO. John Tarrant
Blue hat looks like but not sure: WO. Mike Peace (now departed)
CSM N-Coy Bob Hodgens (probably the one personallity that made me want to stay in for continied contracts)
Hippy Hipson (I thught that was him)
And like you said, Buckey Buchanan
I think the only one missing from thisphoto is WO. Larry King (was he in 3 RCR then?)

Hi Brian, I didn't reconize Lou Kendall, didn't know him when he was with the Regiment but he is a good friend as he was with us in The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. The guy in the back right looks like Peter Neuf____ more to his last name not sure on the spelling.

"Sam Pengelly"!!!  thats' him, I don't know how I forgot that name.  Remember the British Helicopter they had to flatbed out of the AOR when the panel markers few up and hit the blades?  There was talk he's have to pay for damages.  I don't think that ever happened. Smiley
Sam went back to school in Germany to graduate with my wife, also an adult student at Baden High. Smiley

No Rick, Neil is up here in London, and that's definitely not him.  Leo's not in the photo either, the closest guy wearing the light RCR hat is Lou Kendal, and Pretty sure the far hat wearer is Sam Pengelly.

My God...How the memories start flooding in about that tour...There was to Jacks, the one in the picture is now in Gagetown as a CE SUP. He was in a rather severe motor cycle accident and is still recovering. I don't know where Petes at these days. I too am now a CE SUP in Sydney after my incident in the Black Forest in Germany, sure do miss those beer tents.

The photo labeled Irish Bridge – Line West; the person on the right is Jack Gaudet…is this the person who was in the motorcycle accident?

I last visited Jack and his wife Allison in February of 1991, and have since lost contact.  If he was the person in the accident, can you please forward his phone number, so I can call his wife?

If he is not the person, does anyone know his current location?  In 91, he was working for the 17 Wing CWO – he did not go to Germany with the Bn 88.

Cheers,

Dave

Hello Dave

It was the other Jack Gaudet that is now an Engineer that was in the accident.
Not sure where Jack is now but I think Ted Stoneham may know where he is.
I'll drop Ted a line in Gagetown and keep you posted if I find anything out.

Cheers
