Our deepest condolences to Mr. Craig's family (RIP).  Mr. Craig, was a highly respected (RSM) and memories of our days as young privates going well out of our way to avoid him at all cost.  Sammy McCullough, was not so lucky while crossing the parade square one afternoon while station at CFB London, Mr. Craig, observed Sammy, walking across the corner of the square and call Sammy, over.  Mr. Craig, asked Sammy if he knew who he was and Sammy happy as a peacock, said yes sir your "Meaney Craig" Sir.  Well you could hear Mr. Craig's booming voice throughout CFB London.  Sammy, never forgot his first encounter with Mr. Craig.  Pro Patria.

Back in 1964 in Support Company 1 RCR in Germany WO 2 Bob (Meany) Craig was CSM of Support Coy.  The HMG Pl was also the Corps of Drums at that time under
Sgt Joe Lanzrath who was the Drum Major (The Drummie).

There were at least two cases that came up on Orders Parade in front of the Company Commander, Major Jim Knox of privates in the Drums taking a punch at Lance Corporals.  Sgt Major Craig decided that he had had enough of this BS and one afternoon called a parade of the Corps of Drums in behind the shack where they lived.

Craig dismissed the NCOs and told the assembled privates that any more cases of punching Lance Corporals would be dealt with by him personally.  "Don't punch a junior NCO" he said, "Come and take a punch at me instead", he invited.

He then took off his battle dress blouse and his belt and invited any man in the platoon to have a go with no NCO witnesses and no consequences.  No one took up his challenge for he was lean and mean at that stage.

There were no more punch ups of Lance Corporals in the Drums.  Not everybody liked Bob Craig but he was respected as a CSM.  Some troopers were scared of him too!
