Idea… Photo archiving management position

Ok, since the Jeff Wood post, I’ve been mulling over the fact that we as a Regiment have lost some valuable information, stories/anecdotes, and perhaps more importantly, historical photographs.

I appreciate that this very site, has provided our members with a great forum/resource to reconnect, and post some great photo’s.  I also understand the Regt Adjt, is trying to gather some of this data/photo’s etc…  However, I think we need to move forward in a more positive manner…

General Outline:

-   Regiment to adopt a methodology of managing and archiving images (past, present & future)

-   Dedicated position (perhaps a good rehabilitation position for a wounded soldier)

        >   Individual should be provided with courses necessary to ensure he/she is conversant with all programs, filing, and archival methods necessary to manage position in the best interest                  of the Regiment.

        >   Member to be responsible for site management, and gathering and overall management of images.

-   Dedicated PC, Scanner, Printer, Burner, with External Backup, and/or distributions options as required to sustain position mandate.

-   Appropriate software, i.e. Adobe Photoshop for editing, and an image organizer for overall management and quick retrieval.

-   Photography Forum – members can upload personal photos similar to our current message forum, and provide a caption; Who, When, Where, etc…  Again, similar to the current forum, other members can provide additional names; fill in the blanks as required.

Essentially, the above is the gist of the idea.

I know the big issue will be money, but the reality of the issue is; the Regiment is losing so much of it’s history, through the eyes of the soldiers who form the regimental core.  I believe the cost if far too high in losing such history – such history is being lost with each passing member.

I’m sure the cost of a capable PC, and appropriate hard, and software is manageable by the regiment. Again, rather than release a valuable member of the regiment, retain them, and provide a source of pride in developing such an important position.
----
As an additional thought, each new member of the regiment, should be photographed, and provided a history form to fill out indicating some basic personal info.  The photo/info can be then added to the new position for processing.  Thus, the basis of an illustrious career is captured from day one, and linked throughout ones career.

The potential is vast in this regard…data, which can be quickly retrieved and provide to the member upon release, historians, and/or the media if required.

I realize I’ve just burst this out, and perhaps it needs to be clarified, but I hope the gist has been presented with enough of a spark that others can grasp the general concept.  Perhaps as a group, we can collaborate to build upon this idea and put it forth to the regiment.

Perhaps the reunion may be such an arena, and/or a place to gather funds to turn this idea into a reality.

Cheers,

Dave

Dave I am in, and my company will offer to donate the PC for this indivduals use. Anyone else out there can donate as well. I am in touch with some others that would contribute monetarily if needed. Let me know if this project can get off the ground. You may have to convince the Regt Adjt. Keep us posted.
