I'm not sure who's they are, but I'm sure who's there not ; Aldore's as he never owned a pair of socks . Molley tried to get him a pair but he didn't know how to put them on . He got a new hat instead and it took him a year to learn how to wear that right .
I'll throw my guess in as Mookie's .

Back around 1975 Chuck Shaw was retired and working as a Commissionaire at London City Hall. I had the bn photo man, Roger Corbin, take the picture and a copy of it hung in the Home Station Sgts Mess for years. The story goes that Chuck's wife Marg did not like the socks because they had been knitted for him by an old girl friend before he was married. He was proud to wear them on Regimental days. Hi Buzz:
I wonder whatever happened to that photograph. Perhaps it is with 1 RCR in Petawawa and no one knows where it came from.
Chuck Shaw retired from the army in the early 1970s and got a job as a Commissionaire at London City Hall. One day a very scruffy man wearing a leather jacket adorned with swastikas and iron crosses came strolling in. Chuck told him he could not enter City Hall with Nazi insignia on (Chuck was a vet of WW II and Korea). Maybe Chuck made up the ruling on the spot, who knows.
"I am a citizen of London and I will come into City Hall anytime I want and I will wear anything I want", the hippie said. Chuck said nothing more but came around the counter and grabbed the guy by the collar of his jacket and the seat of his dirty jeans (Shaw was a big man). He rushed the guy out through the front door and propelled him down the steps and there are a lot of steps in front of London City Hall.
If the hippie ever showed up again at City Hall he was properly dressed for Chuck never again saw a swastika or an iron cross on any visitor to City Hall. Maybe the word got around.

In answer to Mike Blais' request for a SITREP on Chuck I am sorry to report that Chuck passed away quite a few years ago. When I was posted back to London in 1989 after 12 years away I looked for Chuck and there he was--gone.
When I hung the photo on the wall of the bar in the Sergeants' Mess Chuck came to me after a couple of days and asked me to do something with it. He was getting a heavy duty ribbing from all his buddies about the lack of polish on his shoes. So I took the photo out of the frame and the base graphic artist, George Taylor, used a black Magic Marker to put a shine on Chuck's shoes. After that the members and visitors could see the socks and not notice the footwear.
This thread brings to mind Joe Ross, Bert Lauriks, Boots Tribble, Mookie Norman and countless others. The mess life of those days seems to be a part of the Army that is now gone.

Thanks very much, RT. I was fortunate to have spoke with pretty well everybody you mentioned and some others when I was the bar manager while recovering from my first back operation. As piper in Germany, I spent the occasional Friday afternoon talking with Bert before the troops arrived. Mookie was my favourite, I think he liked young sergeants and, of course, we/I, sure as hell like him.
I'm thinking of heading up to London for Pachino day, perhaps we shall have a toast for the old fellers who are no longer with us and times gone by.

Hi Mike:
Let's hope you can be there and your idea of a toast to those who have gone is a good one. I enjoyed the comradeship of the Home Station Sgts' Mess from 1970 to 1977 and never found another place like it in the CF.
Of course, in those days, the army was changing all around us and during my time there we were ordered to amalgamate the Home Station Sgts Mess with what had been the Base London mess. This was done successfully with goodwill and cooperation on both sides. The RSMs in those years were Meany Craig and B.C. Robinson and they both ran a tight ship in the mess as far as conduct and dress were concerned. The New Year's Eve parties were spectacular running through to breakfast at 0600 hrs which allowed a few hours to change and recuperate before reporting in for the Levee.
There is a picture of Mookie Norman at Jim's Photo Challenge "Who are these 3" dated about June 16. See you on Pachino Day.
