Good day brother's,  Thought that I would write and tell about the excellent work that I have witnessed over the last two months with the CAV.  I participated with their Ortona unit at a Motorcycle show in London On. in February. They came up with a plan to fill a WWII 105 shell with spare change and any donations people would give.  They donated $1004.83 to the London Military Family Resources Center from that shell.  This past weekend I was honoured to attend another Motorcyle show in Toronto with our Normandy unit, and the shell is travelling, the count is not yet complete.  They are gathering donations and attention to The Tony Stacey Veterans Care Center, in Scarborough.  Gentlemen, this center is a one of a kind in North America, They not only house and care for the Vet, but they allow the wives, and special care dependant's to reside with the vet in the Tony Stacey Center. This center receives very little government support and our CAV members in Toronto have taken them on as their prime charity to ride for.  Normandy had some of the residents from the center on hand at the show on Saturday.   The following day, I received so many astonishing comments from passersby about the Vet's who were in attendance, people were thankful for the introductions to them and geniunely enjoyed their time they spent with the Vet's.  I have heard from the center that that Vet's themselves were overwhelmed by the experience and the appreciation from the biker communities.  They had a great afternoon and were apprehensive to go back to the center, they talked about it all the way back home.  The CAV is now holding strength at well over 3600 members, we ride to have fun and raise funds for charities of a wide variety.  We are vet's who are not yet finished serving our country, we are bonded by our military background and our love of the open road on two wheels.  Look for the CAV at www.thecav.ca   That is my story and i'm sticking to it!  Hope your all well and happy, call if you need me!

The process at this time does not matter BJ (I havn't a clue)  You concentrate on your task at hand my friend.  The CAV would never stand before your livlihood.  When you are ready we will learn the process together.  I suspect the Battle of the Atlantic unit there in HFX will set ya up and Trapper(paul cane) will come down there and stand up your unit.  I am happy to hear you are interested BJ and knowing you the way i do, i can tell by your words that the CAV has bitten ya buddy.  This is good!  So you do what ya gotta and stay in touch, we will be there when you are ready.  Tim

Let's Ride!
Wounded In Action
Posted By BY SEAN CHASE, STAFF WRITER
Posted 1 day ago

This weekend, military veterans and current serving soldiers will be rolling through the Ottawa Valley to raise money to comfort wounded soldiers who are medically evacuated from Afghanistan.

The WIA (Wounded In Action) Ride will be held on Saturday with bikers rolling out of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 72 beginning at 11 a. m. The ride is being hosted by the Anzio Unit of the 1st CAV (Canadian Army Veterans).

Unit president Stewart Noseworthy hopes to have over 100 bikers registered. Bikers from the Harley Owners Group (HOG) and as far away as Trenton, Kingston and Ottawa will be joining the ride. The cost is $25 per bike with a meal included.

Funds raised will go to the Fisher House, a large residence located at the U. S. Air Force Base in Landstuhl, Germany.

The house is supplied by an American charity to support families of U. S. wounded soldiers. With Canadian casualties, the Fisher House has freely opened its doors to families of Canadian wounded.

The house has been described as something like a Ronald McDonald House for wounded service members.

Mr. Noseworthy said with another major deployment of Petawawa soldiers to Kandahar, Afghanistan, there may come a time, unfortunately, when Fisher House may have to be used.

"People should understand it could directly involve someone they know," said Mr. Noseworthy, a 21-year veteran of the Forces who has served on deployments in Cyprus and the former Yugoslavia.

When a soldier is wounded in action, he or she carries little with them when they are dispatched out of Kandahar on a medical flight.

"When they land in Germany, all they have is the hospital dress on their backs," he added.

Riders will drive in a police-escorted convoy from Pembroke to CFB Petawawa.

From there, they'll move down Round Lake Road to Killaloe, Foymount and Eganville before returning to Pembroke via Highway 41.

The three-hour ride should conclude by 3 p. m. with a dinner and raffle draw back at the Pembroke Legion.

Mr. Noseworthy called the fundraiser crucial for the Petawawa/Pembroke area because so many military members who live here will be deploying to the dangerous Afghan theatre.

He acknowledged casualties is

something soldiers and their families don't want to consider prior to a deployment, but it is a reality of the job.

"You never talk about 'what if', but you know it can happen," he added.

The CAV was formed by Canadian veterans whose common bond was serving their country and the fact they were avid motorcyclists.

To date, the organization has members who have served in every theatre of operations, including NATO and United Nations missions, and also hail from the Air Force and Navy branches of the military.

The organization's honourary Rider-in-Chief is Gen. Rick Hillier, the former Chief of the Defence Staff.

"They share the common bond all military people have and they ride bikes," said Mr. Noseworthy. "In doing both these things, they've had fun and raised money for charity."

This will be the first ride in the Ottawa Valley, but Mr. Noseworthy hopes it will be an annual event.

Donations can be made at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 72 in Pembroke before and after the three-hour ride. They can also be dropped off at Super Look Salon and Spa in Petawawa.

Veterans motorcycle unit riding back into city

“At all times we’ve seen every ride or event as a success from start to finish — pushing negative energies aside. We use strength and honour to do what we can to help other’s, thereby helping ourselves.”

These positive words come from Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Unit president Paul ‘Trapper’ Cane. His speech posted on the Canadian Army Veterans website exudes an “always seeing the tank half full” attitude, acting as the inspirational voice for this unique group of Canadians.

Many Canadian veterans have formed into tightly knit units to continue the traditions and bonds formed in war and peace. The Canadian Army Veterans (CAV) Motorcycle Unit was founded in 2003 by current president Cane and fellow veteran J.S.Y. ‘Doc’ Lebrun. Their intention was to create a laid-back and open association comprised of veterans who ride to support various charitable causes. The two shared a strong foundation — they both loved motorcycles, riding and maintaining the values of our country’s uniformed service.

Today, there are over 3,500 members in 36 units of both veterans and veteran supporters. All unit names come from a particular war battle — World War One, World War Two, Korean, etc. Collectively, CAV has raised over $5 million for different charities, with International Suffering Canada (ICross), a charity supporting orphans, widows and health workers in Africa, being their primary focus.

Last year the Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Unit chose Kenora as the location for its first annual Lewis McKenzie Order of Canada Ride, an event to raise money for ICross.

Kenora was chosen because of its central location in Canada. When it was announced that Kenora would be hosting the event, the city quickly got a committee together of reps to organize the event for the first time. Members of CAV were met with such incredible enthusiasm from the city that they now consider Kenora somewhat of home-base.

“We put on such an incredibly fantastic event, that they’ve adopted Kenora,” said Carol Davis, recording secretary of Kenora’s unit. “They couldn’t believe the hospitality and the opened-arms reception Kenora offered. There was total community involvement.”

Due to the event’s overwhelming success, (Kenora) Hindenburg line president Bill Maidens ensures the event will now run “each and every year.”

Not only is the Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Unit honouring its military veterans, but its supporters as well. Members of CAV are made up of both veterans and non-veteran supporters. The Kenora line houses two veterans, Maden and current Mayor Len Compton. The leather jacket uniforms indicate a member’s status with either the words “veteran” or “supporter” on the back.

CAV members will arrive for their second annual Lewis McKenzie Order of Canada Ride on Aug. 1, where they will enjoy an evening of meeting and greeting at the Branch 12 Kenora Legion. On Saturday, Aug. 2, a commemorative “welcome to Kenora” flag raising ceremony will be held at the Kenora Armouries at 10 a.m.

A police escorted ride to Beatty Park in Keewatin will bring members of the Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Unit and the general public to the Cenotaph Memorial Service at Beatty Park for 11 a.m. Here, everyone is invited to take place in the full memorial service and dedication of the memorial plaque, a new addition to the park.

The plaque contains “50 veterans or city members that have lost their lives,” and is funded by locals who have family ties to the people honoured on the plaque. Davis hopes to prolong the honour extended towards our Canadian veterans throughout the entire year, as opposed to solely on occasions like Remembrance Day when “the names of all the serviceman who lost their life are read aloud and the other 364 days their names are buried somewhere in a file.”

Everyone is encouraged to come together for the event and the reception to follow at the Branch 13 Keewatin Legion for 12:30 p.m.

With the rest of Saturday and Sunday packed full of activities for CAV members, and a farewell and departure on Monday morning, Kenora is continuing to come together as a community to provide support for the event.

The intentions for CAV are truly honourable and CAV president Cane sums up his vision for the national organization in his speech posted on the website.

“We want to be remembered as who we are, powerful, positive riders, identified as Canadian military veterans and great supporters, who represent a pure and powerful resource that exists among our fellow citizens. Riders who mirror the strength and honour of our nations military, who are now fighting terror and oppression far from home.”

Maden, with much anticipation for this year’s event, stated “last year Kenora was witness to a special event and I hope this year will be the same.”

If you wish to become part of CAV, as a veteran or a supporter, you will be more than welcomed. Contact Bill Maiden for more details.

Miner and News file photo

Canadian Army Veteran motorcyclists and local dignitaries held a memorial service for Kenora war veterans at Lake of the Woods Cemetery during the first annual Lewis McKenzie Order of Canada Ride in 2007. The ceremony included a special dedication to the Kenora family of Cpl. Albert Storm, one of two Canadian soldiers killed in action against a suicide bomber in Kandahar, Afghanistan in November 2006.

CAV not trying have road officially renamed
Posted 20 hours ago

Another repatriation of a fallen soldier passed this week and Canadian Army Veterans were there again to honour him and his family.

According to CAV member Chris Graham, a small stretch of road by CFB where CAV members stand during the ceremonies is already known by proxy as Repatriation Row.

CAV members are not trying to have the stretch of road officially renamed.

They are trying to have a 70 pound stone plaque erected inside the fence at CFB near the area where they stand during the ceremonies.

The plaque they’ve created reads “Repatriation Row, We will never forget your ultimate sacrifice, Stand down soldier you are homeward bound.”

“The tablet would forever capture our memories of the fallen that came home from doing their duty for Canada,” said Graham.

CAV members are still in the process of speaking with military personnel about erecting the sign at the base. They would like to see it placed inside the fence at CFB to avoid vandalism.

"By getting this stone piece put into place on Repatriation Row this will remind us that not only is November 11 the time to remember our fallen but we should remember them every day," said Graham.

Conditions of injured motorcyclists upgraded
Published Tuesday August 12th, 2008

Wedding day accident near city | Charges pending after driver swerves into group of motorcyclists en route to wedding

The RCMP says charges are expected in connection with a weekend accident that forced a bridegroom to miss his wedding and honeymoon.

A local man is recovering from serious injuries at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital after a car crossed the yellow line of the Lincoln Road and crashed into a convoy of 10 motorcycles that were travelling to the man's wedding ceremony.

The man was a member of the Fredericton and Oromocto-based Paaschendaele unit of the Canadian Army Veteran Motorcycle Unit. The club is a group of mostly retired military officers with a passion for motorbikes.

The groom had asked his colleagues to accompany him to his wedding in a special surprise for his bride.

But the group didn't make it to the church.

As the convoy motored down Lincoln Road towards Oromocto, a Ford Escort station wagon travelling in the opposite direction crossed into their lane and hit the bridegroom and four of his colleagues.

Three bikers, including the bridegroom, were admitted to hospital in serious condition and the fourth was treated and released. RCMP said the men are now listed in stable condition.

RCMP staff Sgt. Gary Cameron said he expects charges under the Motor Vehicle Act will be laid against the driver of the Ford station wagon.

"Charges are pending the conclusion of the investigation," he said.

Cameron said the crash could have had a much more tragic ending.

He said the motorcyclists were banged up badly, but they managed to escape with their lives. He said the bikers were between 30 and 48 years old.

The driver of the vehicle and a small child weren't seriously injured.

Cameron said it appears inattentive driving due to driver distraction was a contributing factor in the crash.

Cameron said the RCMP has finished collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses, but the investigation will be considered ongoing until charges are laid.

Lt. (Navy) Brian Owens, Canadian Forces Base Gagetown's public affairs officer, said two individuals in the convoy were active military personnel from the base.

He said one soldier was with the 2nd Batallion Royal Canadian Regiment and the other one was with the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering.

Owens said the base has been offering support services to help them recover from the accident.

"We'll do what we can to help them through this time," he said.

"We'll give them support and help them get back on their feet, get back to work and get healthy. I know the units have been in touch with them since the accident occurred and are dealing with them on a case-by-case basis."

Gentlemen, thought that I would alert everyone to the "Invisible Ribbon Rally"  This rally is to support the Trenton Military Resources Center and will take place on the 20th of September 2008 at Trenton, Ontario.  A parade will form up in Centenial park and March of at Approximately 10:30 am, ending in Buster Alyea Park behind the Trenton Legion.  We will then form the parade into the shape of ribbon, outline it with motorcycles from the CAV and invited riders from the Trenton Motorcycle communities.  Once the ribbon has been completed, a picture will be taken from above and posterized to send to the Troops in the sand box. (Please wear Red Shirts for the picture)   From there the day will be filled with entertainment and BBQ.  Festivities include Static displays from The CAV, St.Johns Ambulance, The Trenton Legion, The MFRC, The Poppy Truck will attend. Childrens events " The Kiddy Commando Course" and face painting.  The Sky Hawks have confirmed that they will drop bye and Search and Rescue say that they will swing bye and repell in.  There is entertainment scheduled for the entire event, including live performances from local talent who have volunteered their arts.  So anyone that happens to be in the area on the  20th September 2008, drop bye and support the Military Families," The Strength Behind The Uniform"  Look me up at the CAV display, or running around like a one armed paper hanger, be happy to see any of you fellows
