Hello Jim:
Is that the set-up for the Prime Minister's Demo on the Mattawa?
That happened with PET as PM and JADEX as CDS if I remember correctly.
All the best, RT

Hi Guys
It was D Coy I believe plus the Arty and one tank (they had to tow it to the Mattawaw Plains to fire) and as soon as they fired it the whole place where I was sitting (bleachers) crashed to the ground!! We fell about 25' straight down. As far as I know no nobody was hurt!! Oh yeah they had a C5 bombing run by the Air Force. 4 x C5 came in from the camp side and fired MG and dropped Napalm. The last plane was commanded by a Maj and he took the tgt right out! The Royal Canadian Artillery had their L-19 lay line. A lot of stuff to remember!!
Jim
PS If any of these facts are wrong please tell me!!!!

Jim,
Your memory is bang on. I was a flunky for the occasion -- I seem to recall it having to do with escorting somebody in the PM's party -- and remember him moaning and bitching about having to go into the hinterland to see destruction and hear loud noises. As I recall, the demo ended with a company APC advance and a dismounted attack against a bunch of pop-up balloons set up by Bud Taylor. The weather was nice, though.

Hi Don
Yes it was 69, that was the first summer I did not do the Changing of the Gaurd in Ottawa. We had great weather thru all the rehearsals and lots of dust. If I'm not mistaken there was a minor accident with minor injuties. Our company was on the left and Dcoy was moving into position and there was so much dust that you could not see very much in front of you and all of a sudden crash. No ramps where down and I think the driver had a pretty sore chin. Actually that is where I met my wife, I was driving a carrier and at then end when we did the advance and the civilians came down to look around this young girl came over and talked to me asked a few questions. I met her the same night at Moreheads and well the rest is history 38 years. Had many good times with guys from London when they came to Pet, plus I served in Cyprus with them in 1974. I also remember during the FLQ when we relieved them in Hull PQ, the guys were not very happy because you just returned from Cyprus and I think you were called back from leave. I know we were told not to say to much, take over and let these guys go on leave.

Hi Ken, I remember the events you talk about but (I didn't think there was any dust on the Mattawa plains) lol. You also mentioned Moreheads now there was a spot local talent every week now sure what day it was on, but good times for sure.As for the FLQ I was home on the Rock and was called back of Cyprus leave for duty like many others. Good memory Ken.

Hi Guys
This morning when I woke up I started to think of Capt Al Fowler. He was in an APC, C/S 4 wrapped up in maps and stuff. You know I had the opportunity to work with him in 1994/1995 in AdmPer in NDHQ. Al was a civi then and we had a riot. Ohhh the memories!!
Don if I remember right, it was 1969. Without getting too technical, that was the year they put a guy on the moon. I rigged up a TV ON CHANNEL 4 and the Bn HQ watched it. Next day we had the Call "0, this is Apolo 11, through me to Houston Over". Cpl Garnet Cox was the one saying this until he left the Bn (a yr and a half). Ohhh the memories!!!

was that the year that one of the boys fell alseep during a stop in the advance, and almost got run over by a APC, I know the prime minister was up on the hill watching the demo, If menory serves me right they had the aircraft do a straffing run in front of the simulated battalion advance

Hi Jim I well remember Capt Fowler was he the Coy 2 i/c that year, and Dave you're right on both accounts. That was a good year because after the demo was over and Bn had a Ex and a Bn section commander competition which some how I won and got promoted to M/Cpl.

Hey RT,
I don't think Jadex was CDS then. He might have still been the brigade commander, but when I left Pet for 2RCR/Fort York in November 1969 Radley-Walters was commanding the brigade. I think the CDS at the time was a Van Doo with pilot's wings -- ye gads, I can't remember his name but I remember him telling the media he was exceptionally-well qualified to lead the unified Canadian Forces because he was a a FINK ("a flying infantryman with naval knowledge"). Jadex didn't become CDS until about 1975.
