Well Deserved
« on: March 18, 2008, 06:53:37 AM »

Alex Ruff was my Plattoon Commander, and Wayne Bartlett was the CQ when I was in "O" Coy just before I left 3RCR in '99.

Two soldiers from Grey-Bruce - Tara native Maj. Alexander Thomas Ruff and Meaford native Chief Warrant Officer Wayne Alan Bartlett - are to be awarded the Meritorious Service Cross (Military Division) by Gov.-Gen. Micha‰lle Jean in a ceremony in Ottawa next week.

Ruff was the officer commanding Hotel Company, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group, Joint Task Force Afghanistan from January to August 2007.

"His tactical skills and outstanding leadership were instrumental in defeating a determined enemy during numerous engagements of his combat team," a news release from the Governor General's office states.

Bartlett, now of Saint John, N.B., "is being recognized for his outstanding military expertise while deployed as the regimental sergeant major of the Operational Mentor and Liaison Team in Afghanistan from February to August 2007," the news release says.

"His integrity and profound regard for cultural differences greatly contributed to improving the confidence of the Afghan National Army and its operational effectiveness."

Ruff, 34, is the son of Tom and Mabel Ruff of Arranvale. He has been in the service for 15 years.

"His mother and I are very proud of him," his father Tom Ruff said. They, along with Alex's grandmother Peggy Ruff of Tara, will be attending the ceremony in Ottawa on March 26.

Ruff, who is now stationed in Gagetown, N.B., is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion's branch in Tara. People are invited to visit the branch any day after 3 p.m. to sign a congratulatory card for Ruff, legion member Brenda Funston said.

Ruff is carrying on a family tradition of military service, his Tom Ruff said. His grandfather, Jack Ruff, served in the air force during the Second World War, his great-grandfather, Percy Ruff, served in the First World War and his great-great-grandfather, Thomas Ruff, served during the Boer War.
