MILLER, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL (RETD.) A. G. Lieutenant-Colonel (Retd.) Alexander George Miller (Alex), MMM, CD, died peacefully at home Wednesday, March 12th, 2008 after a long courageous struggle with cancer. He was 65 years of age. Alex was born in Montreal on January 9th, 1943, where he lived until moving to Rouse Point, New York. In 1961 he enrolled in the Canadian Army and transferred to the regular force in 1963 where he served with distinction until retirement in 1997. During his career he served in Cyprus (three tours), Germany, and Vietnam. He was also stationed at Canadian Forces bases in London, Borden, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Gagetown, Moncton, and Halifax. Originally commissioned in The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada, he later transferred to The Royal Canadian Regiment. He considered himself privileged to serve with so many fine people during his army career and especially admired the strong sense of loyalty and teamwork commonly found in a good regiment. Alex was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4; The Black Watch Association; The RCR Association; The ICCS Vietnam Association; and The United Services Institute of Fredericton. Prior to his retirement he served as Field- Officer-in-Waiting to the Governor General of Canada and as a trustee for HMCS Sackville. His other volunteer activities included the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires; the St. John Ambulance; and the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme. As an active member of the Fredericton Highland Pipe Band and the 3 ASG Pipes and Drums, Alex enjoyed learning and playing the bagpipes. At the request of the Producer of the Nova Scotia Tattoo, Alex organized and led the tattoo Pipe Band for two years. Alex is survived by his wife, Phyllis (MacFarlane); daughter, Heather, son-in-law, David Hall; and grandson, Chaz Alexander; his mother, Elizabeth Augusta LeMoine Miller of Chateaugay, QC; three brothers, David (Sharon) Stephen (Shirley) and Craig (Ann) all of Montreal, QC; four sisters, Debra (Ron) Young of Toronto, ON, Tamia (Ray) Floyd of Welland, ON, Jane (Dennis) Herman of Banff, AB, and Kerry (James) Andru of Ladnor, BC. Alex was predeceased by his father, Alexander George Miller. Alex deeply appreciated the support of his family and the abiding friendship he shared with Jim Geneau, Major Barrie Taylor, Major Phillip and Suzanne Bury, Bill and Doreen Leonard, Major John Harrison, LCol Isaac Kennedy, and General Maurice Baril, and to mention but a few of his many piping friends, Brian Arnold, Janet Noiles and Doug Cottrell. Among the many friendships that graced his life were his in-laws from the Nashwaak, David and Marilyn Steele, Fred and Carol Humble, Ruth and Russel Hay, as well as David and Nancy MacFarlane. Alex's life was also enriched by the Executive of the Black Watch Association through whose efforts he was able to maintain strong bonds with so many of his military comrades. The family will receive visitors at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton, NB (458-9170) on Friday, March 14th, 2008 from 7 to 9 PM and again on Saturday, March 15th, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service will take place at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 16th, 2008 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Doug Blaikie officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in the Pleasant Valley 42nd Highlander Memorial Cemetery. For those who wish, and in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes made to the Oncolology Department at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, The Extra Mural Program, or the Fredericton SPCA would be appreciated by the family. www.mcadamsfh.com
