Hello Wayne O'Toole:

Yes, Wayne, that is definitely your namesake--CWO Wayne Northrup--a gentleman and a Royal Canadian who was (and I am sure still is) a proud member of the Canadian Guards.

Hi Jim:

CWO Wayne Northrup was my first Platoon Commander and Pl WO. He ran the whole show and boy what a show he ran. He taught us how to soldier, but he also made it fun. The adventure training trips he put on were a highlight of all our training. I'm sure he had a good contact in the TDM. I never seen so much ammo in my life. We once spent a whole afternoon just firing the 38mm riot guns. To make sure all rounds had detonated he had us go out and kick them. Just imagine the result with no resperators on. He was a soldier's soldier and a hell of a gentleman to boot.

Jim,

When I arrived at 2 Cdn Gds as a pimply-face 19-year-old second-lieutenant in September 1962, the battalion was designated for Public Duties -- Changing of the Guard in Ottawa -- and had a height requirement.  Wayne was the RP Corporal and, being 'vertically challenged' by those standards, his nickname was "Little Jesus."   My recollection is that even then he embodied the very best quality of the infantry NCO, firm but fair, and his guardroom and defaulters parades did what they were meant to do -- reinforce acceptable behaviour without undermining the worthiness of the man.
