Top Right, 1986, Lt.-Gen.(r'td) Jack Vance.  The second commanding officer of 3 Mech Cdo (1971-1972) and the one who unified the oddest collection of retreads ever -- Queen's Own, Black Watch, Guards, RCR and PPCLI -- following the move from Ft. York to Baden.  My company (C Coy) was commanded by a Jock, had a Guardsman 2i/c (me), a Rifleman CSM (Vic Ramsbottom), Vince Spicer was the CQMS, platoon commanders and warrant officers from all of the English-speaking regiments  and a mixture of everything else but Van Doo throughout the ranks -- even paratroopers who'd completed their first tour in the newly-formed (1968) Canadian Airborne Regiment.  'Colonel Jack's' first directive upon taking command was that there would be no more celebrations of any occasion except Canada Day and the birthday of 3 Mech Cdo.  Suddenly, what had been a fragmented gang pulled apart by conflicting loyalties, was a unified whole.  He was a great CO who should have wound up as CDS but politics got in the way.

Back in '82 in Pet' on Battle school, I was jacked up by a MWO Irvine, next day by (I thought the same) a WO. WTF?? I thought.  Cheesy (ranks of the two coulda been different at the time - long time ago) - but threw for me a loop as per the rank structure I was taught in Cornholis! LOL!  Grin
