14 xtras?? Did 12 on / 12 off myself for a month on one of the OP's after an incident at our platoon stay at Ledra....like Mike I won't go into the reasons why  ....suffice to say I learned my lesson.

The time on the OP didn't really bother me; well the first 2 weeks anyway - after that it kinda routine & boring on the same OP; can't remember the OP name; was in the tower of a house supposedly on stand-by for a HQ; we had to check the generator in the basement at the beginning of every shift. Just down by Bastion; aboout a 15 to minute walk from OP C100, depending if you had to rapell or climb up the old city wall.

Hi MR HICKSON, I WAS ON DUTY ONCE (OF MANY TIMES) AT THE DESK LEDRA AND THE OP'S RAN OUT OF GAS FOR THEIR HEATERS, TPT DIDN'T HAVE ANY BUT I GOT TWO BOTTLES NO PROBLEM AS I KNEW THE OFFR'S MESS JUST GOT SOME IN FOR THEIR BAR B QUES SO I LOADED UP A 5 QUARTER (THANKS TO THE OFFR'S MESS) AND SWAPPED THE EMPTY'S FOR THE FULL.THE TROOPS STAYED WARM THAT NIGHT. ALSO RANSACKED THE CO'S WOODPILE FOR IRISH BRIDGE,AS WELL AS THE OFFR'S SAUNA AT BLUE BERET CAMP. GOT CAUGHT ON THE LATTER TASK BY AN OFFR BUT MAJ MAGUINNESS SAVED MY ASS!! TOOK A WHITE SOFA FROM OUTSIDE THE TPT OFFICE AT BLUE BERET AND PUT IT IN IRISH BRIDGE,AS WE NEEDED NEW FURNITURE,WE BURNED THE OLD SOFA FOR HEAT.........THOSE WERE THE DAYS

The thing that you did wrong is getting caught. ...LOL! Ain't that the truth Jim! Coulda done a lot more, but kept under the radar for what was left o' that tour...and boy, it was a good tour! Too bad, it was closed out to us Canucks.

I don't remember hearing about the flags being stolen, but I do remember on the 84-85 tour someone destroyed the cake made for the Regimental Birthday and CWO MacDonald went nuts  . He had an RP and a regular soldier on security picket on every floor of Ledra Palace for weeks, day and night. I don't think they ever caught who destroyed the cake. Anyone else remember the ordeal??

I have another story bout extras , one that does not breach the sanctity of what happens in the mess stays in the mess and no names no pack drill. I was a young no hooker, in pioneers at the time. Fred White was the Warrant Officer. He, BTW, was also a man who, like marv, had a glare that would strike fear into any snot nosed private, myself included. Rick Morris, Decky Stafford, Tom Lyvers Joe Parsons RIP, Steve Ruthven, Mike mcCully and McIasac... anyhow, was a work hard, play hard group, let me tell you. Anyhow, alls good yada yada yada till I was selected for Combat Leaders Course in 78. At the time, I was living in BB4, third floor, the room in the centre, to small to share. Before I left, as per the BBNCO's instructions, I unplugged the fridge, stripped the bed, turned in my sheets and left my blankets folded neatly at the end of the bunk. With everything ship shape, Joe and i headed off for Pet until what I figured, barring injury or brain cramp, would be December.
Bout a month and a half later, Sparky, aka Joe Parsons, goes home to see his wifey for the weekend. We were both in Pioneers at the time so when he came into my room Sunday night on his return and told me what had happened, I thought he was pulling my chain.
He wasn't.
During my absence, ole Mikey's room became the floor's smoker and the fridge, unplugged, became the storage unit for a variety of foodstuffs the lads used to grab at the mess hall at supper to munch on later.
Did I say I unplugged the fridge?
Anyhooooo, theres an inspection.
A big inspection.
Though memory is a bit hazy as to exactly who was there, I believe it was Fred, CSM Ed Laporte, RSM Girden, assorted officers and the CO.
As I understand it, someone hurled when the RSM opened the fridge door and the sweet essence of old rotting sandwich meat et all struck them full force right in the kisser.
Brrrr.
Well, I think you get the drift of where this is going.
Cacaville.
Between the overflowing ashtrays, beer-pop cans, half full garbage cans, bedding no longer neat and tidy, pizza boxes, rotting food, and my absence... well, as we say in pioneers... fire in the hole!!
Was a long week in pet. Every time the course WO, Bud Graham, looked at me I figured, holy crap, here it comes. RTU... go to jail. By Friday, I decided a solid offense was my bet defense and the best thing I could do was to head to London with sparky, telephone Warrant White Saturday morning and tell him my side of the story.
IE. The room was clean, the door locked, the fridge unplugged.
Needless to say, I did not sleep well that night.
Nor did I have the WO phone number. And considering the flack he must have taken over me, the fact the platoon had to clean up the mess, I was not certain how my call would be received.
Bout 0700, I heads over to the BOS. I'm pretty sure it was Al Peterson, who was one of my instructors during depot a couple of years earlier. I told him my story and explained I needed the Warrant's phone number. He looked at me like I was nutzo, probably thinking, kid, you should have stayed in Petawawa.
Mustering courage, I used the pay phone in BB5 by the BOS's office. Figured if I was going to jail, I'd save Al a walk over to barracks to find me.
Twas a terse conversation, starting with my introduction, followed by a moment of silence, and the disturbingly cold tone of... Blaaaaais, your in deep shiiiit!
Brrrrrr again!
being a very young private, i was bit shaken but, pressing onward, I think I did pretty good explaining my innocence. When I volunteered to stay back in London, he told me to go back to Pet with Joe and finish the course. Which was a good thing as it was pretty well forgotten by the time I graduated and returned to London. And considering I did not have to report to CSM Laporte, who I found pretty intimidating, or the RSM, on day one of my return, I'm pretty sure he went to bat for me.
At the end of the day, I spent a couple of weeks in Ipperwash after we returned from Norway. There, I became intimately familiar with the art of scrubbing pots... which was okaydokay with me considering what might have been!
