Hi Tony
The whole of P Coy! I was in CFOCS at that time but I worked with a couple of Guards you might know. Here is a picture of them. Wally Fowler and Vic Hancock. I was to instruct in French and that's OK because I come from Montreal. If you didn't speak french well!!!!!! Actually, my Grandmother was french. CFOCS (CF Officer Candidate School) was where all officers took phase 1 training.

Question . . . I see Van Doos, Royals and, I think, one Picklie and all are wearing gongs. But why not sashes? In other pix I see gongs and sashes so I'm confused. What is the protocol for the wearing of the sash by infantry Senior NCOs/WOs?
Cheers.

Hi Al
The date was 1973 and we had lost all Regimental accouterments except for the cap badge. In a 'no hat place' like inside at work or even the Mess, you didn't have anything to let you know what Corps the fella belonged to if you didn't know him. I never wore a Sash all the time I was at CFOCS. The pictures below show the Dress Policy for when I was there, 1973 - 1977. CD (Gongs) do not qualify you to wear a sash. The rank of Sgt does. As you see:
1973 Queen's Guard without CD with sash. Posted to CFOCS

1974 Without CD no sash

1975 with CD no sash

1977 Promotion

1977 with CD No sash

1977 Home again with CD and sash

1986 with CD and no sash

Jim,
Thanks for that illustrated explanation. I had to ask because the old brain cells couldn't quite wrap around the comings and going of the accoutrements in the pix. In the Guards all senior NCOs wore the sash all the time, except for Lance-Sergeants, but that was a regimental quiff and after 20 years on civvie street i've lost touch with the protocol.
I remember those bad old days of no badges and how everybody yearned for some form of group identification. In 1973 Bud Dion and I were students at the Tri-Service staff school and when it came time for the course mess dinner we said f*** it and punched holes in our mess kit jacket lapels to put the beavers up. We got some odd looks but nobody said anything and since there were few infantry reps on staff -- and none of the Eight-pointed Star persuasion -- we got away with it. The authority to add badges came some time after that but I'm not so vain as to think we had anything to do with it. Somebody -- I think it might have been Jadex -- finally realized that the essence of morals is individual recognition, group identfication and purposeful activity. I learned that at army cadet camp in 1957 and never forgot it but clearly the Hellyer yes-men never learned it.
This Regimental message board is a great place for old farts like us to catch up on the changes that have occurred since we hung up our soldier suits for the last time. Obviously a lot has happened since then.

Oops. Obviously, I meant "morale", not "morals." Clearly, the fingers are working as poorly as the brain. Apologies to all.
