Quick Story:

I was the driver for the CO, [then] Maj Ivan Fenton, and MWO Steve Douglas, and was driving them around, for a Recce of a future Coy position in Wainwright.  As we were driving around, we came upon this Pte, who was manning some position, or doing something...can’t remember his exact job.... Regardless, we had stopped, and Maj Fenton  had ask him a question, and then he [the Maj] hopped back into the jeep – well I had just released the clutch to pull away, when Mr. Douglas told me to stop, and he swung out of the back of the jeep.

Now keep in mind that I was new to the coy, and had never been in a position to have the pleasure of the Sgt Major speaking to me directly from a distance of 2-inches from my face.... so I had never witnessed Mr. Douglas verbally berate someone.  Well; bottom line – the soldier was slightly slovenly in his deportment and response, and when first spoken to by Mr. Douglas, he did come to attention, but soon (within a fraction of a second)came to a rigid position of attention and you could actually see his legs shaking as all the cockiness left him...in more ways than one.

Well my god; Mr. Douglas was in his prime that day, as the Maj and I looked on, and I am sure we were both thinking the same thing – Thank God it’s not us!  Well, he jacked that young fellow up, like I’ve never seen before...and I’ve been on the receiving end of a few good beratings in my day, and I [and I’m sure Maj Fenton], looked on in amazement.  It was like looking at a train wreck (for the young fellow), and we could not look away.  Well, Mr. Douglas, got back into the jeep, as the Maj and I looked straight ahead, and he [Sgt Maj] told me to carry on...so I pull out the clutch, and off we go.  Ten feet later, Mr. Douglas looks at us, and says – Well, do you think I scared him...then started laughing, in the great laugh he has.  It was just too funny after that.  However, I don’t know who that soldier was, but I’m sure he’s told that story a few times to his buddies, as it no doubt left an impression on him throughout his career, and beyond.   I also took note that day...and watched my Ps and Qs, while in the service of Mr. Douglas; good lesson all around.

Cheers,

Dave

Dave,
I too had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Douglas in fine form during 3 stints under his authority. You may remember M Coy barrack inspection before leaving for RV85 (he was in full flight, on tip toes pace stick in a certain Pte's face "bye the f**k....if I was a private I'd drop kick you right in the nuts!!") it was a classic. Pat Turpin & Charlie Toope could barely contain themsleves. He also had me take my airborne pt test 2 hours after the 2nd leg of 2x10.....I'm sure he enjoyed watching me running around the track on tippy toes like Fred Flintstone. Without CSMs like that being in a rifle company would be rather boring with few stories to tell 20+ years later.
