PRO PATRIA 2007
« on: January 22, 2008, 12:13:39 PM »

RHQ is starting to gather the submissions for the upcoming issue of Pro Patria 2007.  While unit articles capture the story of recent regimental activities, there is still opportunity to record the memorable events and Royal Canadians of years gone by.

I am seeking short articles, anecdotes and photos of general regimental and/or historical interest.  There are periods of our regimental history that could be better documented, along with the stories of those Royal Canadians who were there. While we all follow closely the actions of our Regiment's soldiers in combat today, there are still many tales yet to be saved to round out our regimenatal story.

Germany, Cyprus, Ipperwash, etc., etc., every location at which the Regiment has served has matching stories of what it was like to be a Royal Canadian there, and then.

Whether it be a battalion recall in Germany, a still memorized OP briefing from Cyprus, or a training day in Ipperwash, each deserves to be remembered as part of our regimental story.   It can be a simple as choosing one of the photos already posted in these forums, and then adding the unit, place, date, training activity, a description of the dress, weapons and equipment.  Follow that with a few words about the soldier(s) pictured and the photo then becomes a piece of our history with the story behind it.

Submissions for Pro Patria can be sent to the Regimental Adjutant at any time.

Dear Sir; I'm 73 years old and still calling people "SIR". I don't know whether or not my story will qualify, but here goes.
When I joined the Army in 1951, I was assigned to the British Columbia Regiment. The BCR was to supply one troop to be part of Y Squadron of the Lord Strathconas Horse Regiment. We were going to be the armoured contingent of the 27th Cdn. Inf. Brigade as Canada's commitment to NATO in Germany. At the last moment, someone in Ottawa decided that the Royal Canadian Dragoons should go instead.
As a cosequence of this decision, we newbies, still hardly through basic training were given the option of a release or transfer to one of the Infantry Battalions, namely the Pats, the RCR,s or the Van Doos. Since I didn't speak french and had never been to eastern Canada, I chose to go Petawawa and the 3rd Bn RCR's. We travelled by train to Pembroke and were brought to the camp by truck arriving very early in the morning. At this point, I believe my die was cast as to being a successful RCR. You see the first NCO I saw was the RSM and I looked at his hat badge and asked him if he was in the Service Corp. For those reading this, please remember that I was barely 17, very wet behind the ears and DUMB. To my uninitiated eyes the RCR and the RCASC hat badges were similar. I trust that you all will forgive me. Signed, Hal Prittie

That was pretty funny, Hal. Tell us, what was the RSM's response?

Hal, thank you very much for that tale.  Your story very effectively describes how we all started in the Army not knowing much about the details of the life we chose.
