Every Canadian is entitled to Old Age Security retirement benefits upon reaching age 65.  You have to apply for it and the amount of the payment is based on THE NUMBER OF YEARS OF RESIDENCE IN CANADA after age 18 to a maximum of 40.  Here's the kicker -- you have to justify every absence over six months and, based on my recent experience, overseas postings don't count as "residece in Canada." In my case, both my wife and I (a former RCAF nurse) were initially denied six years of residence because of my two accompanied tours in Germany.  They eventually recalculated the benefit but not before putting through hoops for five months.

The lesson is -- get your ducks in line and have the documentation (either orginals or certified-true copies) you'll need to to claim overseas-service-as-residence ready to include with your application.

...and some folks wonder why I think politicians IMHO are just freakin' weasles.

Callin em weasles in giving them something... just plain uncaring , boneheaded  piles of Huh? is  closer, but i get your point Gerry. But , again i say, politicians themselves are NOT to blame, other than the fact that they dont know what is REALLY going on.....these people go in to office nad of course have no idea what /how their ministry or area of office actually runs... it is the bureaucrats, and mainly those who are unscrupulous who are the problkem....case in poit is Vet Aff where it seems Mr Thompson has seen thru the gobbeldy goop in his own Ministry and now understands he has been run around the lamp post chasing his tail [ ideals], by his very own bureaucrats... who of course run the ministries day to day...we need a complet overhaul of all these Ministries, and ALL OF THE BUREAUCRATS... there was an incidennce several yrs back, no names will be mentioned...but the end result was that DND was out severla hundreds of millions of dollars... and actually , no definitve amount was given.....this loss of desperatly needed money for National Defence, was critical....think back, where did the losses start??? the bureaucrat in charge , was NEVER charged.. instead , they were quietly dismissed, no monies ever reclaimed, [[ one cannot when no one is charged] and later turned up in another department with a very lucrative , and powerful position...this bureaucrat was a thief,,,thru and thru, but a very clever thief , who had implicated others..ie politicians, who were unwittingly  " in on " the foul doings...ergo... the quiet cover up...most Cdn s had no idea....there is where the waste is..and then it is clawed back from wherever of least resistance.....VETERANS are one of the greatest groups for resisting strongly... we have spoke of this on this site before..Veterans are naturally reluctant to go against the gov, the system and ultimatly ..the FLAG...the heart of our great country...we , as a group have to find ways to get around this... then too , the gov will treat us like liars and mallingerers... pathetic and terrible.. but they do , because we are easy scapegoats.....ranrad

ranrad,

You're right, of course.  With the soldier and his spouse paying federal taxes -- the basis on which OAS entitlement is really calculated -- throughout the entire time they were on the foreign posting, it should be a no-brainer.  But all the bureaucrat sees is "out of the country," and the justification for any hold-up is (and you will be told, if you ask) that anything else is out of his/her department.  Taxes are collected by Ottawa, the CPP office is in Moncton NB, the payment office is in Matane PQ and the office you have to deal with depends on what your last province of residence was.  If that was Ontario, it's in Scarborough, but it's different for everybody.  These people do not talk to each other and the only common thread among them all is you, the pensioner.  As far as the politicians -- especially the ones in Moncton, Matane, Scarborough any of the other places where federal dollars have been sent under the umbrella of 'diversity' -- it's all hunky-dory.  This thread has been started as a heads-up to my fellow Royals.  If you make it to 65, you're entitled to get back some of that money you've been paying to the national treasury every month in the form of Old Age Security.  But be prepared to fight for it and don't expect it to be easy.
