Hello Mike, Jim: Ron Eddy is looking at an Inuit grave in that picture. We came upon several of those on King William Island when we were looking for Franklin and his lost Royal Navy sailors in 1972. We could see the body under the rocks and it was well wrapped in wolf skins. Because of the cold and dry climate it was hard to tell if it had been there for 20, 40 or a hundred years. We noticed that the Inuit put their people to rest in welcoming places, the kind of places that you would pick for your own campsite. Ron and Marilyn are doing well and living at 57 School Av, Halifax NS B3N 2E1. Ron is not yet on the easy email route. I will send him a copy of this picture. Thanks Jim, RT

Reference Mike's question, I do not think that we found any new clues to the loss of the Franklin ships. We collected a lot of artifacts including what might be the bones of one of Franklin's sailors. All the stuff we collected was shipped to the National Museum in Ottawa as I was told. We did not have any follow up and we all got back into the swing of battalion life. Immediately after that trip the UNEF II started up and some of the guys were off to Egypt and others went to Germany. I am glad to have been on Northern Quest. It was good soldiering and also good fun. We all learned a lot and practiced our skills while enjoying some great fishing. Comments, Jim? All the best, RT

Hello Mike:
Bruce Martin caught the biggest fish. I will have to go digging in my old barrack box to show you photo evidence. Let us see if any others who were on that trip claim the honours. Those arctic char were the hungriest fish I have ever seen. When you hooked one of them there would be two others swimming alongside in case he dropped the lure. I kid you not on this, in the crystal clear water we could see them. It was still not easy fishing. The shoal or pack of fish came along the coast about five times a day at maybe ten miles an hour. If you were ready or could get to the shore in time to cast into the turbulence in the water you got a fish. One minute later and they were gone. If memory serves me correctly we are talking about ten and 12 pound fish.
All the best, RT

ranrad,
Char tastes like a cross between pink (not red) salmon and trout. Very delicate. Best done poached or fried in a light batter, served with lemon. Run, don't walk, to your closest fish market -- or find somebody who can import it to you from north-of-Sixty -- and get some. You'll not regret it.

By God Jim, but they were fine fish! We had no landing nets but found that we could play them into the shallows over the rocks (visible in your photo) and then skid them up on to the shore. Stan Dauphinee (The Crow) had 40 pound test braided line and he just hauled them out like a tow truck pulling a car from a ditch. The rest of us were true anglers--we played them to shore on monofilament. One of these days I will post the photo of Bruce Martin with the biggest fish. For the moment you will all have to believe me. Of course you will, I am a fisherman and a Royal--I cannot tell a lie! Regards, RT

Hi Bob & Guys
I remember using a Red Devil, the only thing that would catch them. We would stand at the shore and the Char would come in a run around the bay. You would see a break in the water (>) about 2 miles away. When the (>) was of to your left about 100 yds you would cast your line and wack, you would catch them anyhow you could. I saw them hooked by the head, tail and anywhere in between. One day a family of (Eskimos) showed up they were nomads. They decided to try fishing and by the end of the day, there were three families, about 15 plus us fishing. When the Char started their run, all the lines were cast. The strange thing the (Eskimos) wouldn't try to wind them in but turn around and run until the Char was on the shore. I laughed and laughed but there they were, catch, turn around and run. I'll never forget the day that the (Eskimos) showed up!!! It like I said - the Army treated me fine!!!!!
