There is an ongoing project in Ottawa to to confirm the eligibility of deceased service members for inclusion in the 7th Book of Remembrance. Unfortunately, available records have made positive identification of specific personnel files difficult. This is required to allow the necessary verification of circumstances, date of deaths, etc.
In order to assist those running the project, I am looking for any additional details that might be available on the following Royal Canadians:
Private Hoovier - Killed during training accident on a mortar range, 1978
Master Corporal Jeff Smith - Killed during training accident on a grenade range; 1983.
Master Corporal Wood - Killed in military parachute jump during training. Location of death unknown; 1984.
In particular, information which will assist the archives in locating their individual files are being sought - service numbers, dates of birth, dates of death. Any other information on their service would also be welcome.
Information may be posted here, or mailed to me at oleary.m@forces.gc.ca

How about Pte. Walker who's Grizzly flipped on the 401, while on a road move (convoy) from Pet to Ldn. 1983. He was crushed under it. I remember that he had to do fire picket the night before and tried to get out of driving the next day but he was ordered to shut up and drive regardless of how he felt. He died!

A ROYAL CANADIAN "NEVER PASSES A FAULT"
|
I am wondering if the deaths of Private Victor Wedell and Master Corporal Woods have been recorded. Both were killed in a grenade accident, Germany, 1983. Sennalager, I believe. In fact, there are Royal Canadians who post here that were present at the time. (I may be wrong on the second name but I was pretty sure it was Woods. He came from Woodstock and, as a serving member of the 1st on summer tasking at Ipperwash, I droved down for the funeral. At the time Sgt Greg Starkey (since taken his commission I heard) was in charge of the burial detail.
Hope this is of assistance.
PS Victor and i were C-2 Gunners when delta went to Germany in 79 en mass and to Mike Company, 3RCR. He was a good soldier and I would sure like to see his name recorded in such a solemn tome.

On the grenade range in Camp Sennalager in 1983 MCpl Jeff Wood and Cpl Victor Wedell died in the grenade accident. They were both in Mortar Platoon which was part of Mike Company. Maj Ring was the OC and MWO John MacNeil was the CSM.
After the accident MCpl George Laidlaw and another NCO MCpl Norm Langlands provided first aid.
A young Cpl Woods died jumping with the Black Forest parachute club in 1982 or 1983. This was a club most jumpers on base used. Cpl Woods was a soldier in J C oy 2RCR in 1979 the same time I was in G Coy. I do believe that he did his QL3 with Cambrai platoon under India company. Back then Lt Willart would have been the platoon commander. Cpl Woods got posted to 3RCR in Baden around the same time as me in the summer of 1980.
Hope this helps.

Hey John I remember you well, and I guess it doesn't really matter the details, the end result was the same. How about M/CPL Ian MacDonald, took a round while safety NCO in RV 87. 7.62 in the left upper chest, then took a trip through his body resting somewhere in the lower trunk. NAsty wound but he survived long enough to heal up then fell out of a boat and got whacked with the prop and killed! ANd also CPL. Paul MacGinnis 1 RCR (mortars)/ 3-CDO, Died in the Alaska Herc crash in 88/89, not sure?. Heard he was taken by exposure while waiting to be freed from wreck.

I remember that too Tim; we were the pacquet right behind. From what I remember (and saw), massive wound on the forehead. An off-duty nurse arrived and her & the sgt tried to do their best. Remember a car load of young male civvie punks drove by as me and Geoff tried tried to clear out the back of the griz for a possible evac, the punks were actually pointing & f**king laughing! - nuff said; still bothers me when I think about it.
As for Ian, was up in the turret of the griz live-fire with the g-pig & 50. Troops were doing an advance on a russian defence system we set up. Ian was safety staff with Sammy. Remember seeing Ian go down, then no-duff. Then chopper came in for med evac. Determined that Ian took a richcchet to the upper left chest, and ended lower right posterior back. Anyone know anything about anatomy -7.62 striking upper left chest with heart, major vessels, lung, etc; travelling across the body missing all the vital organs: still blows me away & Ian was waiting on the parade square when we got back to London! Only to be tragically killed in the boating accident later that summer.

Meh, not getting in as much time as I would like; few days a month since sept. Should start to pick up now everyone needs a medical done every 2 years vice everyone (under 40) needed it only every 5. Might try for a GMT instructor in Bordon for the summer with the NAVRES if I can swing it. Watch (wait) & shoot.

He was a great guy to party with.I still think of them gd v40 grenades .If there is any way I could help with this cause, I would and be privledged too.If God listens too sinners, then a special thought goes out to my old friend Victor tonight. IN regards to Cpl Jim Wood I almost sure Mpl Al Hebert was one of the next jumpers that night of his accident. M/CPL Monty Drummond escorted his boby home. I am almost sure there was another accident that summer which involve an drowning in Wintersdroff area quarry, his last name was Wood or Woods, we lost 3 that summer of 1982, I believe he was in "n" Coy.

Glen, you're right and he was in Mike company also. I believe his name was Ford? I know some of the people he was at the quarry with. He was just posted in that summer. I'll look through some of my old stuff and make a couple of querries at work to be sure.
