my uncle, john morris ,coudn't wait to get into the war so he went to canada and enlisted. he joined the RCR . he said he was a machine gunner and that he emptied a belt/cannister(?) of bullets at the red barron.and that he thought he might have shot him down. we didn't think much of this untill years later when read someware that the red barron might have been brought down by ground fire
over canadian lines.any truth to this .also we have no info on my uncles service record .how can I get this.
  thank you, john tancredi

You can find information on the service records for Canadian Soldiers of the First World War here:

Soldiers of the First World War - CEF

The search for "Morris" and "John" returns 69 possible soldiers. Do you have his service number?

There is also information on how to order the records from the Library and Archives Canada:

How to order a copy of a complete service file

With regard to the possibility of your uncle being involved in the death of the Red Baron.   --

Manfred von Richthofen

Richthofen was killed just after 11 a.m. on 21 April 1918, while flying over Morlancourt Ridge, near the Somme River.

The RCR War Diary reports that on 21 April 1918, the Regiment was in the trenches in the "LENS SECTOR"

Lens and Morlancourt are 50 kilometers apart, so it is unlikely he was involved if he was still with The RCR at the time.

thank you regt adjt for your help. I found my uncle's name ,john aloysius morris reg #158640,
he apparently resigned from the 69th (fighting 69th) regiment in new york and went north and
enlisted with the RCR around the 15th. of september in 1915. my mother was always very proud to mention his serving with the RCR.
so far the most I have seen was his enlistment paper, and a ref.  RG 150,accession1992-93/166 box6391-35. do you know what that is?

Name: MORRIS, JOHN ALOYSIUS
Regimental number(s): 158640
Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 6391 - 35
Date of Birth: 20/12/1893

If you send the above information in a request to the Library and Archives Canada (see my link above), and provide them payment information in the form of a credit card number, they will send you a copy of his file.  The soldiers' files that I order usually take about 4 weeks and cost an average of $15 to $20.  The files will include a record of his service giving units and dates, as well as any medical and pay records.

These page can be a start point in helping you decipher all the items in the service record -
