Yes, Al, that is Sgt Olly Olynyk (the Drill Sergeant). He worked for an officer known as the Mad Dentist of Fort York. All the best, RT

The mad dentist was Major Easton, because he didnt get many volunteering for his services he used to approach platoons on parade armed with his dental pick and order people to his office. It was interesting to see platoons suddenly break into double time when his white smock appeared on the horizon and disappear behind the nearest shack.

Hello Rick and Everyone: We were all scared of that dentist. The only treatment he knew was to pull teeth and then pull some more. After a couple of months in the Battalion he was lonelier than a Maytag repairman. No one would go on dental parade. The local German dentists did great business with our 1 RCR soldiers who were happy to pay lots of DMarks to avoid unit dental parade. The dentist would prowl the platoon locations during the day and catch soldiers and order them to open up for inspection, no matter if they were at the QM counter or sitting in a jeep outside Bn HQ. He would order them on dental parade which would always end up in pull, pull, pull! One Saturday morning he paraded 25 drivers from Tpt Pl and pulled 37 teeth. Cpl George Smethurst was the NCO IC the parade and he kept tabs, even while he donated two of own to the dentist. If this sounds unbelievable to the troops of today I am sure no soldier of 1 RCR 1962-1965 will disagree with this story. Regards to all, RT

Hi Guys
I have my own story about this. One day on Bn Pde we were told that the Dentist would be looking at us right behind the CO. Well he did with a another guy that was taking names. All of a sudden he was in front of me saying "Open" and he told me to report to the dental office tomorrow at 0900 hrs. He carried on right through the Bn. Next day I was on Company Orderly Sergeant (COS) and required to form up Coy orders Pde at 0830 hrs which I did. I told the CSM (NS Horne) I was on Dental Pde at 0900 hrs so he said go. There I was in the chair and the Dentist came in and said OPEN. He then put the needle in my mouth and froze the right side of my mouth. He left the room and returned about 5 min later and said OPEN. He pushed on the LEFT side with a pic and said "Can you feel that"? I said yes and he said to his assistant "I'll come back". He came back about 5 min later and tried to pull the tooth on the left side. Well you know I was screaming and Holy Faulk, did it really hurt. He let go and I started to swear and reached up for my face, to feel the spot where the pain was. The assistant came to my rescue and I got back in the chair and the Dentist came back and never said anything to me but OPEN. He then reached inside and pulled the tooth on the right side. Well I never went back instead I went to the German Dentist like everyone else.

A ROYAL CANADIAN "NEVER PASSES A FAULT"

Oh Gerry, I know the dude you are talking about, had hands the size of hams. He did one of my wisdom teeth, holy crap, took over week to heal and, when I left the clinic, the corners of my lips were cracked open and bleeding. He was rough. Fortunately, I lied and told him the freezing had'nt taken effect so he double dosed me. Freaking side of my head was numb of most of th day, which was a good thing.
Heard he ended up north working for Indian affairs. No wonder they love us so... snicker

yeah, Mike I had my uppers out by the same..... Pretty much told him the same thing ( on recommendations from other troops). He refroze (again). He went to work; didn't fell a thing, but felt like a construction worker was demolishing the inside of my yap with all the hardware, grunting, pulling, twisitng, turning, crunching, bashing. Ended up too as a drooling idjit for the rest of the day.

One other about the famous dentist. On exercise in Northern Germany they decided to take the mobile dental lab. It was situated near Bn Hq and BJ Hurley and I were working the Battalion CP. All of a sudden the back door flew open and it was the RSM, Blinky Keegan..who started yelling "Shut the bloody door, get your heads down and shut up."Bernie and I were wondering what was up and locked the door from the inside. Blinky said "keep bloody quiet.' There was a wiggling of the door as we breathlessy waited. After about 5 minutes. Blinky peered out the window and said "Coasts clear". It was Mad Major Easton who had checked the RSM and wanted to try out the Field Clinic. As a result shortly later the Dental van was relocated to B Echelon where could practice on the RCEME and Ordnance types...lol...Pro Patria

Fellow Royals, Yes I remember Maj Sass, and Freddy Louthers very well. In the late seventies Maj Sass, and Freddy were teaming together and looking after the Dental Care for the Bn and CFB pers. I was with Dukes Company at the time as their Clerk and I belive Bernie Hurley, was the CSM. Freddy had just came off his Dental Tech, course and was Gung Ho, to show off his new found skills and Fred, would call me over to the Dental Office every time he wanted a Ginny Pig, and I remember when they were expermenting with the Ultra Sonic Tool, Fred, ask me to come over and let him practise on me. Dr. Sass, would take a look around the mouth after Fred, had had finished the his Ultra Sonic Tool, and give his approval. To say the least, having a former 031, with a Grade Five Education, and the latest Ultra Sonic Tool, proding your mouth cavity made me a little nervous.
Freddy is an excellent Royal and a dear friend. Pro Patria
Ernie.
