Statistics to ponder - US casulaties vrs Canadian casulaties

The US has approx 138000 troops in Iraq.  Casulaties to date are 3848.  As a percentage of casulaties to troops in Iraq, that works out to approx .027%

Canada has approx 2300 troops in Afghanistan.  Casulaties to date are 71.  As a percentage of casulaties to troops in Afghanistan, that works out to approx 3%

Am I suggesting we pull troops from Afghanistan?  NO!  But considering the percentages, we are experiencing higher casulaties than the US.

A point to ponder.

An interesting statistic would be what percentage of their troops spend time in the field compared to ours? Do our troops spend more time on combat ops than theirs? With our outsourcing of some of the rear ech. jobs (cooks, airfield personnel, maintenance ect.) do we also have a higher percentage of our troops being deployed combat operations?

It would be interesting to note what would happen were these statistics applied to each and every NATO member state active in Astan as I think those stats would be more significant as far our particiaption in the war on terror is concerned. Of course, the numbers would be greatly in our favour but these are the hard facts that would be required if Minister bernier, diplomatically, is going to get the Euros to step up to the bar.

Re: stats

Are those figures for fatalities or are they meant to include WIA, as well?

In the case of the US military, while the KIA number is nearing 4,000, we (I've been a US citizen since 2001) have also taken more than 28,000 WIA.   If the Canadian casualties incorporate all injuries, including fatalities, then so should the US figures and that makes the comparison a totally different picture.  If the Canadian figure is purely KIA, then it is indeed a shocker.
