Soldiers to receive Star of Military Valour

In two separate incidents last fall, two Petawawa soldiers -- wounded and under heavy enemy fire -- stood their ground.
Yesterday, Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean announced she will be honouring both men with the Star of Military Valour. It is the highest military honour next to the Victoria Cross.
Cpl. Sean Teal's harrowing experience took place on Sept. 3, 2006, in the Panjwaii district of Afghanistan, when the vehicle he was driving was hit and destroyed by enemy rocket-propelled grenade fire. Several members of the outfit -- 7th Platoon, Charles Company -- were injured and four soldiers were killed.
Cpl. Teal, who was wounded himself, was able to report the situation and call for assistance before returning twice to the vehicle to help evacuate members of his platoon, both wounded and dead.
Cpl. Teal, 23, hails from Dartmouth, N.S.
On Oct. 14, Pte. Jess Randall Larochelle of the First Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group was manning an observation post in Pashmul, Afghanistan, when it was destroyed by an enemy rocket.
Although he was alone, severely injured, and in an exposed position, he aggressively provided cover fire over the otherwise undefended flank of his company's position.
While two personnel were killed and three others wounded in the initial strike, Pte. Larochelle, 24, was able to fend off the attack of more than 20 insurgents.

CFB Petawawa - Master Cpl. Jody Mitic lost his legs when he stepped on a landmine in southern Afghanistan in January.
Sapper Mike McTeague was touring a village near Panjwaii on Sept. 18, 2006, when he was caught in the blast of a suicide bomber. A ball bearing ripped through the back of his neck, and shrapnel through his side.
The two soldiers of the 1st Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment -- Master Cpl. Mitic on prosthetic legs, Sapper McTeague leaning on crutches -- stood among 980 Canadian soldiers honoured yesterday at a homecoming and medal ceremony at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa yesterday for their services in Afghanistan.
The event served as a proud reunion for soldiers of the second rotation, mostly Petawawa-based, who returned home in February after being deployed last August.
Gen. Rick Hillier, chief of the defence staff, was there to help give out 93 wound stripes to honour soldiers like Master Cpl. Mitic and Sapper McTeague, who were injured during combat.
"For me being able to come here, walk and see the guys, I wasn't here to get my wound stripe or a medal; I was just here to participate with all my friends," said Master Cpl. Mitic, who was the last soldier wounded during the mission, just six weeks before the others returned home.
Sapper McTeague, 21, was in Afghanistan for two months before he was injured and sent home. Four Canadian soldiers were killed in the same attack.
"I was mostly worried about the other guys," said Sapper McTeague. "They're like family."
Most of the other soldiers were presented with the General Campaign Star, a medal given to all who fight against an armed enemy. Some soldiers had already received their medals prior to the ceremony.
The highest honour, the NATO Meritorious service medal, was awarded to 1st battalion commanding officer Lt. Col. Omer Lavoie for his bravery and leadership during the mission.
"I wish all 33 million Canadians could be here today and see you, see what incredible men and women they have in uniform," said Gen. Hillier.
Gen. Hillier likened the troops' bravery to that of the Canadian soldiers who fought at Vimy Ridge 90 years ago.
"When the history of Afghanistan gets written, for the troops in this battle who represented this great country the effect may be nearly the same as what the effect was from that Easter Sunday so, so long ago," he said.
He praised the troops for their "loyalty to our country, integrity, dedication and devotion and above all courage."
The 14 Petawawa-based soldiers who have died in the line of duty in Afghanistan were not forgotten.
Gen. Hillier invited one person from each of the 14 soldiers' families to join him as he inspected the parade of troops so that every soldier could be represented.
The widows and family members stood up and slowly followed Gen. Hillier in groups of two and three, holding hands and wiping tears from their eyes.
Cpl. Kelly Dove said she was honoured to represent her husband, Warrant Officer Richard Nolan, who died Sept. 3, 2006, in a firefight west of Kandahar City.
Cpl. Dove was serving in Afghanistan at the time.
"It's mixed emotions. I'm very happy that they're getting their (medals), but also I'm very sad. You know, my husband should be up there getting his. I should be up there getting mine."
Master Cpl. Mitic said the medal ceremony serves as a reminder of the sacrifice soldiers make.
"One thing about anyone getting hurt or killed in action, you're upset for a minute, but as a team you come together that much harder and carry on that much more," he said.

Local soldier earns prestigious honour

A local soldier who helped to fight off more than 20 insurgents after surviving a rocket attack on the frontlines in Afghanistan will receive one of the country's most prestigious medals for valour.
Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean announced this week Pte. Jess Larochelle will be decorated with the Star of Military Valour for distinguished and valiant service in the presence of the enemy for his actions during an intense firefight in the Panjwaii district in October when two of his friends were killed.
He is one of only two people who will be awarded the star - Canada's highest military honour next to the Victoria Cross - during a ceremony later this year.
Larochelle, 24, was manning an observation post while serving with Charles Company of the First Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, when insurgents launched a surprise strike using vast vineyards and marijuana fields for cover.
His observation post was hit by a rocket propelled grenade and Larochelle, who was under substantial enemy fire and in an exposed position, aggressively returned fire, providing cover for his company's flank, which otherwise would have been unprotected.
His section commander, Sgt. Darcy Tedford, and Pte. Blake Neil Williamson were killed. Shrapnel from the same RPG round that hit Willliamson wounded three others.
Marie-Paule Thorn, at the Governor General's office, said arrangements for the presentation ceremony have not been finalized, although she noted the citation accompanying Larochelle's award will acknowledge his courageous actions in fending off the attack of more than 20 insurgents helped save the lives of many members of his company.
Larochelle, whose story appeared in The Nugget several months ago, has been on restricted duty since returning to CFB Petawawa in January due to his injury. The West Ferris Secondary School grad, who is now on the mend, suffered two separated vertebrae as a result of the rocket attack on his observation post, which blew him off his feet and left him unconscious for a short time.
Cpl. Sean Teal, who is also posted at Petawawa, will receive the Star of Military Valour alongside Larochelle, while seven other soldiers will be presented the Medal of Military Valour.
Meritorious service decorations will be awarded to 11 other soldiers.
The ceremony will mark the second time the decorations of valour, which were created in 1993, will be presented. Canada did not have its own such decorations prior to 1993.
They were first awarded in February, with Maj. William Hilton Fletcher and Sgt. Patrick Tower receiving the Star of Military Valour.
