Drum Major - Regt Band
|
Hi there,
Well Gentlemen, I've got to jump in here and say that that is not the RCR Band, but 1 RCR Corp pf Drums. The RCR Band was a professional Brass and Reed band, also stationed in London until their move to CFB Gagetown. That is where I joined them in 1975.
Just a little intro. I joined in 1956 and became a member of the Canadian Guards , Depot and 2nd Bn. In 1960 I remustered to the musioc trade and was posted to the Regt Band of the Cdn Gds and became the Regt Drum Major. When the govt of the day saw fit to tear the forces apart in 1968, I was posted to the Central Band in Ottawa, and then to the RCR Band in Gagetown in 1975. Retired(pulled the plug early) in 1984 with 27+ yrs service and settled down here in NB.
All the best Drummy AKA Jim Stutt

Hi Don,
Not a big deal. I'm just surprised that no one had jumped in before.

Does anyone know where Doug Hilchey can be found. He was my section commander in Recce from 70-74 and would like to get in touch with him.

All in all, nice picture!
I really enjoyed playing with 1RCR Corps of Drums. Many times we would spend our weekends traveling on a bus to this parade or that and the comradery was special. We were a tight group and still are!
I talk to many ex service men across Canada and the US and one thing is common. Its the people you remember. I miss them but in a big way there always be with me. Even the ones the served before and after me.
I remember a RSM saying to the Battalion, "There are 3 kinds of RCR's, those that want to be one, those that are one and those that were one.".
Take care men!

The last time I saw Doug Hilchey he was working for me as a a platoon WO training Officer Cadets from RMC in Borden in 1979. I beleive he finished his career as RSS MWO with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment in St Catherines. Ken Jiggens was also RSS there at the time....

Doug Hilchey was the Drum-Major of the 2nd Battalion Corps of Drums. I think he was posted to 1 RCR around 1968-1970 after the 2nd Battalion was stood down in Germany and 3 Mech Commando was formed. I heard a story about Doug going into a minefield in Cyprus to rescue some civilians whose car had run off the road into the danger area. This would have been in 1970 or 1974. As far as I know Doug never got any recognition for that. Can anyone add a bit more to this story? He was a good man. I will check around in this southern Ontario and see if I can find his present location. All the best to all of you old soldiers, RT

I am pretty sure Doug is working with Al Morris, Eric Hobbes and Gord Romard in St Catherines. Court Services, I think. He may be retired now but they could put you in the right direction.

When and if someone finds Doug, could you also let me know? He was my Recce sec. commander while I was in London. I would sure like to contact him. Or at least give him my information so that he can contact me.
Thanks in advance.
