Jim ;
Eli doesn't really look as good as this picture potraits him to be . He spent numerous hours in plastic surgery & makeup , not to mention the photo touch ups after this picture was taken , just to make him this ugly.

In case anyone is wondering, the picture was taken by RT Walsh at this past weekend's Warriors Day Parade at Tornoto's CNE. Bumped into RT at the Armouries after the Parade and as expected he came armed with a camrera (to everyone's chagrin I'm sure).
Sorry about taking space in this photo album........
Great seeing you again RT. Who knows, our next encounter might be in London's Coffee gathering.
For Barry Lewis, thanks for the words of support. Would not have expected less from you.......(ha!)
Finally, some of you will be interested to know Dave Boyd will be attending our Recruit Grad Pararde this coming Thursday. Should have some pictures posted of the event sometime next week.
Cheers all...........Eli

Hi Fellas
What a trip down memory lane. I'm sitting down in front of my PC thinking about my one and only trip to Toronto's CNE. Wow what a trip!! It was my first trip outside the bn. 1973 I thought "I died and went to heaven." I could tell you a lot more but I won't.

Hello Jim:
What were you up to on that trip? Sounds very interesting. The flanking militia soldiers are members of Grenadier Company of the Royal Regiment of Canada, the RRC, which often gets confused with the RCR by the uninitiated. Years ago, a story on Dieppe in Legion magazine had The RCR storming the stony beaches when it was actually done by the RRC.
Good picture and you are 3 from left. Don't know anyone else in there.
Thanks for putting up the two shots from CNE that I sent you.
Wishing you the very best old friend, RT

Hello again Jim:
This is a PS to my last.
Note the position of "Stand at Ease" adopted by the RRC soldiers on the right of the photo. The Grenadier Company uses Queen Victoria's drill manual when in period dress. The soldier at the left of the photo did not get the word of command and is at attention.
And who is the yardbird at 3rd from left, rear rank, who lost or forgot his hat?

Hi Bob
You're very welcome and as I say, this was my first trip on TD. You wouldn't believe some of the excuses some of them came up with. My first day on this trip as I was signing in I was questioned as to whether or not I was a real Sgt because I was so sharp and so young compared to the rest of the Sgts. I was embarrass and angry. We had 8 Sgts on this crew who had the duty to stand on a stage with head sets on and report on the defence in the 70's. There was 2 Sgts on duty four hours a shift. They would let the civvies in about 75-100 at a time. There was 4 groups each hour asking questions about Defence in the 70's and explaining from a teletype in real time what was happening in the Search & Rescue world. We had a live connection with the gentlemen in Ottawa. You wouldn't believe it there was no one from D Coy that wanted to go on that trip. We spent 2 months in Toronto living & eating in a hotel and I had the best room in the whole world. It was the penthouse suite with swimming pool and Oh what a time....... The hotel manager was a Sgt in Korea and he said to me 'Have I got a deal for you". For the price of a single room on the 12th floor I got this big comfortable 5 room penthouse. I led a Life of Riley.......

A ROYAL CANADIAN "NEVER PASSES A FAULT"
|
I wonder, Jim, if they are living as well today as you were then.
Military recruiters are busy at the Ex Aug 21, 2007 04:30 AM Robyn Doolittle Staff Reporter
Operation Connection is underway at the CNE.
This year the military has expanded its endeavours at the fair. After more than 650,000 people visited the Canadian Forces' exhibit at the CNE last year, military officials asked organizers for another 743 square metres of real estate. That's almost half again as much as last year's 1,765 square metres.
"We are without question the busiest booth at the CNE," said Capt. Wayne Johnston. "We asked for additional space because of sheer volume. You couldn't move at times last year."
It's all part of Operation Connection, a massive project now in its second year, designed by the military to educate the public about who they are and what they do.
With the Afghanistan mission in the news on a regular basis, it's a chance for the public to speak to men and women who have been there, as many of the 140 military officials who will work the site have been to the front lines.
Recruitment officers are also present. If you walk through the main gates of the CNE, chances are one of the first things you'll notice is a huge canvas banner, "Join Us," billowing high over a fleet of military equipment.
The Canadian Forces has kicked its public education and recruitment initiatives into high gear this year and is well on target to exceed its recruitment goal of 700 GTAers for the year. This past weekend, about 130,000 people went through the exhibit with well over 100 stopping each day to talk seriously with recruitment officers.
"We stopped by to ask for some information on the air force," said Marlene Mangos, 49, whose eldest son wants to be a pilot. "We always thought if you joined up with the air force it doesn't mean you get to fly automatically, you could be put on cook detail or something. But they explained that wasn't the case."
Mangos is what recruitment officers refer to as an "influencer," someone who asks questions on behalf of relatives or friends. From 50 to 100 influencers are visiting the recruitment tent each day to grab pamphlets and other information.
"If he actually signed up? That's scary, but if he really wanted to do it, that'd be fine," she says. "He'd be of age and I can't really stop him. But as a mother, it's still scary."
Others are asking for themselves.
"Since the war in Afghanistan, I've given it a lot of thought. I already went through most of the training, but left to become a paramedic," said Mike Doherty, 21. "Now I'm thinking of going back in as a medic. I know of at least two paramedics from Ottawa who signed up."
Doherty finds the military's camaraderie and benefits program appealing, and he's not worried about any dangers overseas. "The Canadian Forces are well trained."

Except for the grey Eli still looks the same as he did when I knew him in the early 70's. Who would have thought back then where we would be now. Eli a CWO and I am retired from the Calgary Police.
