I knew a Ken Rivard from Vancouver, British Columbia. A fisherman who lost his life when his boat sank and he never made it to shore. He served with the Regiment in the 60's. He was a body builder and Battalion Boxing champion. Wouldn't tell me much except Brother and PRO PATRIA. Picture I saw had battledress and forage cap with a yellow band around it. Would like to hear some stories about him. Small name tag for him at my site.

Hi David
I knew Kenny Rivard from the 60's. He got kicked out in 1964 for rape. He came from Montreal, Rosemount, 21st Ave. After he got kicked out I never heard anything of him.
Yes he was on the Bn boxing team and he hung around the weight room. I find it strange that you say it was a Forage Cap with a Yellow band around it? We only had one Ken Rivard, but he was a Royal!! By the way I'm from Montreal only a couple of blocks from Kenny and I too went to Germany in 1962.

Thanks Jim. I guess that's the reason why he didn't say much. It was an old black and white photo. The next time I see his sister I'll ask her if they're from Montreal.

Hi Hugh
Why do you say bullshit? He had rough time in 64. It was him who told me he was charged with rape. I went to 1FDB in 64 and never heard anymore about it. If you say he was your best friend its funny that he hung around with us in 64 and also he comes from Montreal, Rosemount to be precise. If you say he was released and not thrown out for rape, the charge was dropped.
I'm not trying to cause trouble here I'm just telling you what he told me. If it's BULLSHIT it's Kenny that's BULLSHITING. Get it right!!!

Hi Hugh
Look let's get one thing staight: I'm saying that 1. He comes from Montreal: 2. He joined the army from the same place I did, downtown on Sherbrook St in Montreal. 3. He used to hang around with us (a big gang). Lots of girls, lots of late nights in 64 and lots of fights with involements by the Civi Police and Provost and Belgians. He was hauled up for something that hapened between him and a girl from Hamm. I remember asking him what was it about and said rape. Thats all there was and I went to 1FDB and when I got out Maj Degabeo (SP) told me if I wanted to save my career I had to smarten up. Now thats the end of it, no Kenny Rivard after that, no comming back as a civi, no Kenny in 1FDB NO NOTHING. If he came back it was after I left.

Hi Jim, Kenny and I signed up in Montreal on the same day, his regt. no. was two higher than mine, we went through depot together, served in 9 pl together, went to 12 pl together. Went on many leaves together. Including one back to Canada where he stayed with my family. In 1964 I signed on for an additional year and tried to talk Ken into doing the same but he hated barrack life , a good field soldier though. I think it was the winter of 63 /64 he was passed out in the Candlelight, a bar in Soest, and was picked up by the Provost one of whom made the drastic error in judgement of hancuffing himself to the comatose Ken in the rear of a 3/4 T. Half way back to camp Ken awoke. 28 days in the digger. Cheers, Hugh

Hugh, I am curious. What kind of duties were you doing in New Zealand and what was the training like? I would think that would be a nice place to spend a few years.

Hi Mike, I was there from '65 to '68. I wore an Infantry uniform, when I was in uniform and had to qualify on infantry courses to get promoted, but I was in the counter intelligence platoon, which consisted of 5 people. Sounds romantic but, New Zealand had just become involved in Viet Nam and in order to share American intelligence?? they had to have such an organization. The great thing was that I was in civy clothes 90% of the time and travelled the whole country. Did my basic para course down there and was supposed to be the Int Sgt of NZSAS if the Vietnam commitment increased. At that time New Zealand was a socialist country and everything was really inexpensive. Have found New Zealanders most like Canadians of any people I've met. Great laid back country. Cheers, Hugh

Hi Hugh
Right my number was SD195781 but it doesn't answer my question!!! In order to answer David's question. When he (Kenny) told me RAPE you say he didn't, well I'm here to tell you he did. I say in 1964 he hung around with us you say no. I'm telling you I went to 1FDB for 30 days and you don't even question that. I now ask you to send me a picture of " From 1965 Connecting File re 1 July '64 Track Meet. Page 14 "Pte KJ Rivard kept the Regimental banner flying with a second in the 100 meters."

Look Hugh when somebody says BULLSHIT to me it's the same as "Your Lying". I can't let you say that to me.

Hey, Ernie, I was kind of hoping to run into last week in Chippewa for the support the troops rally. Were a few Royal Canadians present... anyhow, if any of you guys have these older publications and a scanner, I think it would be pretty neat to see the entire book in a format that can be read by those who came later or, in a rare instances , before!

To All, At the end of this unfortunate discorse, I will give you my thoughts regarding Ken Rivard. He was brought up by his older sister, in Montreal. Had to work to help family, from Joned the Cdn Army on 27 Sept 1961. Posted to 1RCR. Went through RCR Depot with Gothic Line PL. Got posted out to Ipperwash to C Coy 1RCR. Good boxer, fast runner, excellent friend. Sorry you've left us. Hugh Conway

I don't know the history of Ken's serving with the Regiment but for the five years I've known him, he always treated me as a fellow brother from the Regiment. He was still a hard worker and drinker. We were always pulling jokes on each other and I could count on his support if I needed help on my security patrols. I'm sorry that he got into trouble while he served but who didn't go in front of the Old Man for something. I've done it a few times myself. I still miss him and still honour his memory even with this new information.
