A gift from home in memory of Cpl. Albert Storm

Amanda-Rai Shelly wanted to send front line troops in Afghanistan a gift from home in memory of her uncle.

Albert Storm died Nov. 27, 2006 when a suicide car bomber attacked his armoured personnel carrier on the outskirts of Kandahar City. He was 36.

A corporal with the Royal Canadian Regiment, Storm was born in Niagara Falls and raised in Fort Erie.

“I wanted to do something in his honour,” said 21-year-old Shelly.

Shelly, who attended Battlefield Public School as a child, approached her alma mater to see if the school would be interested in contributing small gifts to be sent to Afghanistan.

She also got in touch with Fort Erie Secondary School, where her uncle attended, and both schools were eager to jump on board.

PharmaPlus on Lundy’s Lane and the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 71 in Fort Erie also embraced Shelly’s quest and it didn’t take long before she had amassed over 100 shoe boxes filled with essential items such as toiletries, candy, lip balm and playing cards.

Amanda-Rai’s mother Wendy Storm said packaged tea, coffee and instant soup and drink mixes are highly sought after overseas as the troops get bored drinking plain water in the hot, dry environment.

“They have to drink a lot to stop from getting dehydrated so these are like gold to them,” she said as Amanda-Rai placed some packages of Crystal Light drink mix into a box.

The boxes will be shipped out later this week, each with a little note or artwork from Shelly or a student who contributed a box.

Shelly is proud of her efforts, as is her family.

Shelly suffered a brain injury in 2003 after the school bus she was traveling in careened down an embankment.

Her memories can get a bit fuzzy at times, but she does remember her uncle and was determined to do something in his honour.

“I’m always proud of her,” said her father Mic, Albert Storm’s older brother.

Woman surprised by generosity of soldiers;
After receiving gifts in Afghanistan in memory of fallen comrade, servicemen arrange special delivery

The voice on the other end of the phone was unfamiliar, yet personable.

As the line constantly crackled with static, the man with a thick French accent offered his sincere gratitude for the gift.

The phone call was a bit overwhelming for Amanda-Rai Shelly.

"It was such a surprise," she said.

In November, the Niagara Falls woman decided she wanted to do something to honour her uncle Cpl. Albert Storm.

Storm died Nov. 27, 2006 when a suicide car bomber attacked his armoured personnel carrier in Afghanistan.

Together with students at Battlefield Public School, her alma mater, and Fort Erie Secondary School, where her uncle attended, Shelly began collecting small items such as pens, candy and toiletries.

She filled more than 100 shoe boxes with the essential items.

Each box included a note in memory of her uncle as well as her phone number and e-mail address. Shelly hoped the boxes would arrive in time for Christmas.

The holidays came and went with no word.

Then, on Jan. 11, she received an unexpected phone call.

Six of her shoe boxes made it to the front lines in Afghanistan.

The corporal explained he was one of six soldiers living in a mud hut in the middle of the desert.

"He was so thankful they had not been forgotten and that people do think of them and care," said Shelly's mother Wendy Storm.

Using his satellite phone, the soldier told Shelly there was no electricity where he lived and the group essentially live by flashlight.

"It cost a fortune for him to call," Storm said. "He even got disconnected at one point and called back a second time."

The soldier, who hails from Quebec, asked about Shelly's uncle.

"He said when they return to Kandahar they were going find out more about him," said Shelly's father Mic Storm, Albert Storm's brother.

Later on that same day, Shelly received an unexpected delivery - a bouquet of yellow flowers.

The card read: A heartfelt thank you for the packages sent. From the guys of Regiment 77D POMLT.

POMLT stands for Police Operational Mentoring Liaison Team.

Shelly was very excited about the phone call and equally impressed by the flowers.

"They're beautiful," she said with a smile.
