 Shocked Shocked

STRATHROY -- A country creek where children swim, fish and frolic was instead swarmed by police yesterday as Canadian Forces explosives experts detonated two live landmines.

The mines, found in a culvert that runs under Inadale Drive between Strathroy and Mt. Brydges, appeared to have timers and were likely the type used to blow up tanks, Strathroy-Caradoc police say.

One mine was discovered by two girls Friday. They called police, and a second mine was found yesterday morning, only one metre away from the first.

We are lucky it wasn't one of those dummy mines we used in the Fanshaw training area during pioneer training. ;-)

Gentlemen, thought I might  update you on the landmines found in Strathroy. Working for the Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service I took the initial call with regards to the mines, and at first thought the female caller must have been imagining, but as officers arrived on scene it became evident that it was in fact a landmine, an anti-armour mine to be exact. Without wasting time the local OPP bomb unit was contacted and they also confirmed the mine, and the Canadian Armed Forces who sent a team from Borden to dispose of the unit. While searching the area, another mine was found approx 100 meters from the first. The complete area was closed off for most of the day and all night as a sweep was conducted for more mines, none found. The two mines were detinated by members of the forces as a precaution. Upon further inspection it was found that there were no actual explosive material or detinators inside the mines and it looks like someone just wanted to get rid of them and threw them into the creek. It was a relief to know that they weren't live but it made for some tense moments and long hours for our guys, the OPP and the CF team from Borden. And I quess you should never be too skeptical when someone calls about things out of the ordinary, cause you never know, it may just be true!!!
