By WO Steve Gillis

3RCR Team wins World Overseas Pacestick Champions 2007

The World All-Arms Pacestick Competition is an annual event held at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England. This event dates back to 1952 when the Royal Military Academy Sergeant-Major, John Lord, initiated the Competition as a practical training aid of the pacestick.

An International Pacestick Team consists of four members, three Sergeants and a Warrant Officer as a Team Captain. The Team Captain provided the words of command over the course of the competition, which includes marching in slow and quick time while pacing the stick. During the course the pacestick is transferred from hand to hand by conducting drill movements forcing the members to be proficient at pacing with the left and right hand.

This year, LCol Roger Barrett, CO 3RCR, authorised 3RCR to enter a Battalion Pacestick Team . . .

Very well done, gentlemen.  This achievement speaks volumes about the level of professionalism, and the respect for tradition in The Regiment today.

Well done lads. When I was posted to the Recruit School in Cornwallis in 1971, the Guards had been rebadged to Royals and CWO John West was the RSM, MWO Boyle, the DSM. We original "Royals", of whom there were only a few, had to turn in our small Regimental malaca canes, {remember them?}, and under the guidance of Mr. Boyle had to learn the use of the pace stick. Not too long after that came the Boyle Pace stick competitions. My neighbour is an old Soldier from the SAS circa 1950"s, and you can bet I'll be printing this out to show him..Pro Patria.
By the way the original Royals at that time who valiantly attempted to learn the skill was myself, Bernie Hurley, Ronnie Toombs, Scrawny Bennet, and Bill Cole
