1 RCR and SSF Smocks

I have a question, something I always wondered. While I was with the 1st (and finest) we were never permitted to wear our smocks with combat trousers. We were only permitted to wear them with work dress pants while the other units in the brigade (from my recollection) wore their smocks with combat trousers as well.

Was there any particular reason for this, other than 'i told you so'?

I can recall one summer where we had to wear the smocks in the field. The ex was held in Borden and Meaford, I was in pioneers at the time. That was the one where a major was carted off by the SAS lads and got his leg busted in the process...  I thought the smocks sucked... it was hot, did not ventilate very well, the clasps kept breaking off or undoing and the seams were always in need for a check for loose threads. Anyhow, after that, we seemed to wear them in only in garrison...

Everything you said about those smocks is true, Mike. But they had that serious cool factor. Along with the SSF boots in our CF's...we were mean...

I have a vague recollection that we did wear them once, on a Division parade, in the field in Wainright. The entire brigade was in combat trousers and smocks..I think. I know we always took them with us in the field..but i only remember ever using mine as a pillow.

I agree
I liked the look of the smock but they were not the best piece of kit I was issued. The smock, boots and workdress pants sure looked good on the square however.

Gentlemen, I have to agree! I really liked the look of the smock with workdress pants and boots, it really made one stand out. I do remember taking our's to Norway in 86, we wore them under our parkas when we went into Tromso, but I do not remember wearing them at any other exercise!!

I was in 1 RCR from 86-88--and I remember wearing the smocks on a few occasions.  The first was when I did adventure training in the Territories under WO Martin.  We flew with the Herk from London to Yellowknife and our dress the day we left was combat pants, boots, blue RCR t-shirt and smock.  As soon as we got there it was great civvys for three weeks but the return trip was the same.  The second time was in Denmark in I think 87.  When we went into Copenhagen for our night off it was the same--Combat pants, boots, blue t-shirt and smock.  And the last time we did a parade in base when L/Col Archibald took over and our dress that day was combat pants, boots, smock, and our undershirts on backwards.  But the smock was cool.  Also in Norway in 87 when we had time off we wore the smocks with combats.

It was a smart uniform. Not a great camo for the field.
I still have mine.

We got the jump smocks first when I was in the Airborne. The cool factor was huge like stated earlier. We wore them in Garrison and parades and sometimes in the field as enemy force units but usually we wore combat shirts or jackets in the field. The smock wasnt all that great in the field but someone somewhere wanted us to have jump smocks like the 1st Can Para Bn had in WW2. I would have preferred camo combats back them myself and a replacement for the old FN sooner than when they were replaced. Hi Rusty.

Gerry
You are right some times we did wear them as enemy force. I still have mine although it seems to have shrunk a bit while hanging in the closet.

keep the faith.

After remustering to supply I had the opportunity to have several of my higher ups tell me combats had to be in one piece, being of semi-sound mind I laughed alot.  There was one other incident that I had a group of 4 RCR guys come in and demand they have the rag in the bottom, and we had none with it.  A WO came down and ragged me out for giving his kids inadequate clothing He, He, I just looked at him kind of strange.  I also ripped it out because it always fell out of my boot and got caught on something.  As for the SSF smock everyone had to return them and some genius figured that they would take them back and take them off the docks later, thats why most of you owed one when you got out.

Ya know its funny but I never heard of nor did I ever take out those flaps in the combat pants. I got out in 82 so maybe it was somethign that started after I got it? First I ever heard of it. Interesting. Mu jump smock still fits but my Greens seemed to have shrunk considerably. Thank god they got rif of the work dress.

Didn't have one of the cheaper ssf smocks. My smock was issued to me on my first posting with the Airborne Regiment. Still have it. I did have a ssf smock also I turned in when I tired another trade for awhile. But that's another story...

Hey John.
Supply Sergeant in Edmonton has a few SSF smocks in stock. I was there last week for a look about and saw them on the rack. Heads up- they are pricey.
They are on line.

Hi Guys:
Just joined the crew.  Found some friends I served with.  Had the SSF Smock but had to turn it in when I left the Regt.  Jerry how did you scrounge yours?  Been looking for one ever since then.

Hey Guys
Went to the store in West Edmonton Mall (Supply SGT) and they had some brand spanking new SSF (like) smocks. They have a few modifications. Nothing too drastic but at $200.00 each I decided that they looked better on the shelf.
They had a few in stock so if your interested they do mail order.
