Hey guys , I was there and remember it well . Mainly swam the pioneer platoon cargo career , which was a test in itself .
I was one of the guys put on night security for the tracks . They thought it was a punishment , but didn't know we had a stock of beer buried in a garbage can , with ice and all . Every night a sand barge would come in and I would party and eat with the crew , which sometimes was families ; great times . An all night party .
It didn't take to long to figure out there was something up when a couple of us volunteered to do the duty full time . The new punishment was that I wasn't allowed to stand security anymore and that others should have their turn .

I remember the story well, Ken (Crew Comd) took the carrier across and once there had to wait for a boat to go down so he went out the back door to wait, once the boat passed they got the word to re-enter so he climbed on the carrier from the front forgetting the back door. The rest like they say is history.

Hi Don
I apologize!! I read it wrong. What made me think that it was Jack, was the story about a carrier going down in the water. I couldn't think of his last name. Well I'll tell you something!! I woke up last night lolol and as soon as I was up lolol I kept on hearing lolol the voice of lolol, ........ Ken Read. He told me he sank a carrier. He said "you don't realize how bad you feel when your standing in the commanders hatch and you're sweating in your top half but your legs are cold lolololololol or words to that effect.
Now getting back to Jack. The same thing happened to Jack Ellis. lololololololol

Buck McIntyre came back to London from 2 RCR in Germany in 1968. He told me about being in the back of a carrier that suddenly filled with water. He said the cam net that had been on the floor floated up and he became enmeshed in it. After a few long and difficult seconds he got loose and exited the carrier. He forgot that he was not supposed to inflate his Mae West until he got to the surface. He popped it and was really moving when he broke the surface like a bass after a bug and turned a somersault before splashing down. We did not know about PTS in those days but Buck McIntyre (RIP) was probably feeling it. Pro Patria, RT
