A ROYAL CANADIAN "NEVER PASSES A FAULT"
|
Another good picture.
Tell me, Willy, what year would this be and how many royals do you think were posted at the base then. Being a young whelp, the base was used mostly as a training area in my time so I am more familiar with the boonies and the sergeants mess! bwahahahahaaaaaa...j/k
I wonder what the base looks like now? I heard some of barracks burned down.
I did spend an great summer there during the year of the hundredth working for one of the greatest Royals I ever had the pleasure to serve with, one Wally Turple. As you might imagine, Myself and the twenty some odd members of the First and Finest ;-) who were delegated for summer tasking were kind of dissappointed having to be away from London when just down the road every royal who could was rallying to the call of the celebration of one hundred years of service.
The day of meet and greet, Wally gets me to assemble the troops. Uncharacteristically, he's not to happy looking or talkative. I thought one of the lads, er, screwed up on the beach or in Thedford over night er something, after all, boys will be boys, and it was time for the regular force must set the example speech (Absolutely unnecessary, I can assure you!) .... he calls us to attention, scowls like only he could do, then breaks out a four day pass for every damn one of us!!!!! needless to say, we were very grateful and, to a man, arrived in London in plenty of time to enjoy the reunion to the fullest.
Hell of a time to be a Royal, boys! Hell of a time! Pro Patria, Mike.

Hi Jim and Rick, I never saw the place in the summer. The property was expropriated from Kettle Point reserve under the War Measures Act in 1939. Scattered around at the present time, as well as derilict cars, are a bunch of unexploded ammunition, I agree Rick, discusting. Hugh Conway

This picture wa s taken in 1959-1960, summer time. I was there as an Army Cadet with the Grey and Simcoe Foresters(A Tank Regiment) Tent at the rear of the camp were used as lecture room for the cadet training which happened each summer. Some of you will remember we of 1RCR had to leave the camp for summer exercises to make room for the cadets. We came back from Gagetown in 1962 and had to change clothes behind the huts and go on leave. Then returned from leave to get ready for deployment to Germany that fall. At the time this picture was taken the shacks were wooden with shingle siding, later they were upgaded on the outside with alluminun siding and inside with tile floors, camp looked great till the late 1970s. I was last stationed there in the summer of 1973. You should see the site of the place now since the natives took over the camp.......
