A ROYAL CANADIAN "NEVER PASSES A FAULT"

Liberation of Kuwait medal
« on: May 16, 2007, 06:39:01 AM »

I believe there are those amongst us who are deserving....

MAY 15, 2007 - 17:20 ET

DND: Presentation Ceremony for the Kuwait Liberation of Kuwait Medal

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 15, 2007) - His Excellency Musaed Rashed A. AL-HAROUN, Ambassador of the State of Kuwait and Colonel Claude Rochette, the Commandant of the Canadian Forces Support Unit Ottawa, recognized Canadian Forces men and women for their contribution to the liberation of Kuwait in a ceremony held today at the Cartier Square Drill Hall, downtown Ottawa.

The Government of Kuwait, in an effort to expedite the recognition of Canadians who played a part in the liberation of their country during the Gulf War, have been working with the Canadian Forces to host a series of medals presentations across Canada. Ceremonies will be held in Halifax, Gagetown, Quebec, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Cold Lake and Esquimalt, in May and June 2007.

Issued by the Kuwait Government, the Kuwait Liberation of Kuwait Medal is available to Canadian Forces personnel and veterans who are recipients of the Canadian Gulf & Kuwait Medal, which is the Canadian Forces recognition. Approximately 1350 qualified serving CF personnel have already been identified.

Approximately 90 active members and veterans from the National Capital Region were personally presented with the medal by the Kuwaiti Ambassador at this first ceremony. "My country recognizes your significant contribution to the liberation of Kuwait, and we are so grateful for this commitment. On behalf of the government of Kuwait, it is an honour for me to thank the Canadian government for supporting and helping us in a time of great need," said His Excellency Musaed Rashed A. AL-HAROUN.

Canada was part of the coalition force organised when conflict first erupted in 1990. Close to 4,500 men and women were deployed over the course of Operation Friction. "The men and women of the Canadian Forces are always proud of carrying out Canada's mandate at home, and abroad," said Colonel Rochette. "This presentation is another demonstration of a Canadian Forces accomplishment and it's obviously an honour for serving members and veterans, who participated in that mission, to receive this medal".

The Embassy of the State of Kuwait has put in place a self-identification program whereby qualified recipients can apply for their medal. Qualified CF personnel can still apply for the medal via the DND Directorate of Honours & Recognition (DH&R). Retired members can directly communicate with the Kuwait Embassy. The initial application deadline of December 31, 2006 has been extended for an undetermined period.
