Five months after Cpl. Albert Storm was killed while serving in Afghanistan, approximately 300 people paid tribute to his memory at a solemn memorial service Monday night.

Family, friends, dignitaries and former comrades joined together at the Royal Canadian Legion branch 71 in Fort Erie, where a photo of Storm was placed on the legion's Wall of Honour.

The ceremony was preceded by a parade from Mather Arch, along Veterans Way to the Legion where wreaths were laid.

A pipe and drum band marched at the head of the procession, which included Legion members, cadets, firefighters and about 30 members of the Royal Canadian Regiment - Storm's former unit - who travelled by bus to Fort Erie to take part.

"I always counted Stormy as a friend, and death won't change that," said comrade-in-arms Cpl. Al Hennessey, who remembered Storm as "a force to be reckoned with.

"It was a pleasure to be a friend of Stormy."

Storm, a 36-year-old career soldier, was born in Niagara Falls and raised in Fort Erie.

He was killed Nov. 27 when the vehicle he was driving in was attacked by a suicide bomber.

He was the 44th Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan and the first from Fort Erie killed in action since the Second World War.

Hennessey and fellow soldier Vic Thibeault described Storm as a man of strength, integrity and dedication, whose sense of humour helped to lift the spirits of his comrades-in-arms during difficult days in war.

I'm going to miss him a lot," said Thibeault. "He was a good friend."

Storm's picture was installed on the Legion branch's Wall of Honour, alongside photographs of other fallen heroes from past conflicts.

Fort Erie Coun. Richard Shular, who represented the town and Mayor Doug Martin at the ceremony, said it was a fitting way to honour a "native son" who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

While gone, Storm will not be forgotten, Shular said.

"He will continue in our hopes, dreams, prayers and memories, and always in our hearts."
