LILLE, France (CP) - Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Sunday that six Canadian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan.
It is believed to be one of the worst single-day toll for the Canadian military in Afghanistan.
"Sadly today has been a difficult day in Afghanistan," Harper said at a dinner for veterans in the French city of Lille, near historic Vimy Ridge.
"We've learned that an incident has claimed the lives of six Canadian soldiers and injured a number of others."
"Our hearts ache for them and their families, and I know as we gather here on Easter Sunday our thoughts and prayers are with them," the prime minister said.
Canadian military officials in Kandahar have yet to release any information.
NATO said earlier Sunday that six of its soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan, but did not disclose their nationality.
The prime minister was in northern France to take part in ceremonies marking the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a historic First World War battle.
The audience gasped audibly when Harper announced the deaths during his address.
Canada has about 2,500 Canadian troops serving in Afghanistan.

There is nothing I hate worse than to hear that we have lost more GOOD MEN. in Afghanistan. I hurts you know. However we know the danger is there to start with, and we also know that some will not make it through the entire mission. While they may get a few of our GOOD MEN we have gotten more of theirs, not that it solves or evens up the situation. I'm sure the best is yet to come from our side and in the end we will win what we went to do.
MAY GOD BLESS EACH OF OUR HEROS and give sorrow to their familys who sufffer from the tremendous loos they have had to receive.
