We did a mill-skills competition and 1/4 of the Battalion got hyperthermia. We had to dig and sleep in trenches instead of using 10 man tents. Now Col. Thompson dug me out of my trench after the blizzard buried me (got an extra 20 mins kip).
Both 3ft picket and 6ft picket were in battalion at the time.

Sure do. Also when he was the OC of Dukes. I remember knocking him on his butt a few times during battalion hockey but he just keep getting back up. 
Excellent soldier. I was on the parade when Dukes Coy was formed with him as the first OC.

Was that ever cold, I was with ADP and we ended up getting recalled back tothe city a week after that storm hit even though the city had request our help early. As I recall lots of frost bite in the rifle plt because we hadn't switched over to winter gear yet. Thankfully the senior guys in ADP had us well prepared.

I remember that exercise well. Although, told not to, M Coy Stores brought 4-modular tents, and the CQ hay-boxed hot meals during a particular blustery day (smile) - Maj Sweetnam had big shoulders....
As for the Dukes Coy; it was first formed in 1978 under Maj Caffery, and CSM Riley.

Hi Rick,
The original Dukes Coy was indeed a full company. I’ve quickly scanned, and uploaded an old picture from the Regiments 95th Birthday celebrations, while in Cyprus.

Thanks Dave. It appears there was an extra Coy at that time. Was this for the deployment to Cyprus? The last course for the Trg. Coy would of finished about the time that the Cyprus tour ended.

Rick; I do not recall the exact date the company stood-up, however, we deployed to Cyprus at the end of September 1978. That being the case, I’ll venture a guess of April of that year, as we spent several months training, and 3-weeks to a month in Petawawa on our final exercises prior to deployment.
Essentially, it is my understanding that the 8CH were a company short of meeting their personnel mandate for the mission, so 1 RCR was tasked to augment the 8CH manning shortages, by supplying 100 soldiers; hence the birth of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Company.
I do recall, that when the company stood-up, a message was sent to HRH, the Duke of Edinburgh, providing all the names of the Officers, and Senior NCOs’…not sure about the men’s names, but I doubt it. Regardless, we received a personal message from Prince Phillip during the tour congratulating us on standing-up a company under his name, and a wish you all success statement….etc.
I’m afraid that’s all I know, about how the Duke’s Coy came to be during that time – perhaps the battalion had a Duke’s Coy prior to 1978, or not; perhaps some of the older soldiers can provide additionally info in this regard.
Anyway, upon my return from Cyprus, as is similar with most of the guys from the company, we had our leave, then began training for the fly-over company to Germany; very good times indeed!

FYI: My wife was posted to Toronto this summer, and we moved to Milton. I get back to the hammer, about once every other week or so, to see my sister.

I remember that during a Cyprus tour if members of the Dukes did not do well on PT thier Coy T shirt was taken from them and not returned until the fitness level was corrected.
