In reviewing Post War commemortions, salutation and Respect for ALL CANADIAN VETS OF WW.2, I have talked to several who, like myself. served in this area. Aanalysis of the conversations has resulted in a OVERALL FEELING of " Being left out in the Cold" where national RESPECT IS CONCERNED. (Note: this is Not about me personally, but about all of the corps) As you read many books written about WW 2, ESPECIALLY those written in both the UK and the USA, rarely if ever, mention the troops of the Italian area, other than to say BRITISH TROOPS ETC.or American troops. To take this one step further, the problem also is very prevalent in Canada too. For example, when ever any of the Press, TV stations, radion stations, Prime Minister's office, Dep't Nation Defence and BELIEVEIT NOT --the royal Canadian Legion, rarely ever mention First Corps troops of the Italian Campaign. 99% of all announcement are about _ You guessed It!!!----D DAY - D DAY!!, June 06 1944.Even the PrimeMinister in his recent speach, said EXATLY THAT on National TV.
I bring up the subject because, like a lot of you of the THE RCR, just like me, are a little frustrated over the lack of recognition due to our Veterans.
I have taken the liberety of writing to the PRIME MINISTER, at great length, outlining all of the above situations, causes, moral and Morale Values and complete lack of Honour for ALL CANADIAN SOLDIERS instead of just a handful. I have received a reply from 'HIS OFFICE' stating that my letter had benen received and that a copy was being forward to Gen. O'Connor at DND. I have also recived a confirmation from his too. I have suggested that for the sake OF NATIONAL UNITY, that ALL CANADIAN soldiers shouls be so honoured and asked that members of Parliament, civil Service etc. be updated in their thinking. Included also was the mention that the troops of Singapore as well as Korea are also Never mentioned or given thanks for their bravery. I shall not enclose the specifics of the letter to the PM as it is persoanal and private. It is also my intention to also contact Vetrans affairs, the Legion national HQ as well as possibly the Gov.Gen Office for further help in this area.
I would llike to say to "ALL" ROYAL CANADIAN, Get On Board, push the effort and gain the respect that you and I as well as all other Canadian troops who have not received their ANNUAL HONOURABLE MENTION, as D DAY DOES EVEY YEAR ON JUNE 06 TH. ALSO REMBER THAT OUR FIRST CORPS FOUGHT FOR 22 Months, while D Day forced fought ONLY 11 months,
I do agree that on REMBERENCE DAY in most, if not all cities, full houonr is given to everyone, regardless of service. I am sure you will agree with me, that it is this type of service that should be the Norm , rather than the exception.
