This is worse then the goof pissing on the tomb of the unknown soldier....
Hero beaten Andrew Seymour, The Ottawa Citizen Published: Monday, March 12, 2007
A Canadian soldier awarded a Medal of Military Valour for braving enemy fire in Afghanistan is angry after he says was jumped from behind and taunted by four men who beat him up in a Morrisburg bar on the weekend.
Master Cpl. Collin Fitzgerald, who was awarded a Medal of Valour for heroic actions in Afghanistan by Governor-General Michalle Jean on Feb. 19, had his foot broken in three places and needed 10 stitches to close a cut above his right eye. The 27-year-old soldier also suffered a broken nose and two black eyes in the attack, which occurred after midnight Saturday morning.
Master Cpl. Fitzgerald said Monday he had only been in the bar about 20 minutes when he was struck from behind.
"I don't even remember getting hit," he said.
"I went and sat down at one of the tables, and next thing I knew I woke up and a hole in my head and I couldn't walk on my foot," said Master Cpl. Fitzgerald, adding that witnesses told him one of the men said, 'What kind of f--king hero are you now?' as they were being pulled off of him.
"I was just covered in blood. I didn't know what happened to me," he said.
Prior to the assault, Master Cpl. Fitzgerald said he had been at the bar visiting with his fiance's brother Shawn Hitsman and some other childhood friends when he moved to the table.
After coming to, Master Cpl. Fitzgerald said Mr. Hitsman and another friend, Bobby Paradis, helped him up and drove him to the hospital.
OPP Const. Paul Murphy said a 21-year-old Morrisburg man has been charged with aggravated assault. The man has since been released from custody on a promise to appear in court. Since he has yet to appear in court, his name was not released, police said.
Const. Murphy said more charges are expected to be laid against the 21-year-old. Police also expect to lay charges against several other suspects, he said.
After serving eight months in Afghanistan, Master Cpl. Fitzgerald said, "not in a million years" did he expect to be jumped in a Morrisburg bar. He also never expected to be shown such disrespect.
"Ignorance is bliss. They obviously have no idea or any clue what the hell is going on over there," he said. "We weren't just sitting in a camp. We're getting shot at. People are dying. Buddies of mine I've seen get blown up. They really don't have any clue, and they don't know how lucky they have it here in Canada."
Master Cpl. Fitzgerald's mother, Arlene Fitzgerald, said the attack has left her shaken and upset. "He came home in one piece from Afghanistan, and he gets beaten up like this in his own home town," she said. "He just came back from hell."
Master Cpl. Fitzgerald, who is a weapons instructor at CFB Trenton, was one of the first recipients of the Canadian Medal of Military Valour.
According to the Canadian Forces, Master Cpl. Fitzgerald was recognized "for outstanding selfless and valiant actions" carried out on May 24, 2006, during an ongoing enemy ambush "involving intense, accurate enemy fire."
Master Cpl. Fitzgerald "repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire by entering and re-entering a burning platoon vehicle and successfully driving it off the roadway, permitting the remaining vehicles trapped in the enemy zone to break free."
According to the military, Master Cpl. Fitzgerald's "courageous and completely selfless actions were instrumental to his platoon's successful egress and undoubtedly contributed to saving the lives of his fellow platoon members."

In the ole days we'd have us a convoy..... that being said, the ole days are no more. I can't imagine what kind of low life goof would hunt down a soldier who just returned from the combat zone, attack him from the behind and put the boots to him soley cause he won the Medal of Valour. God almighty they should send him to one of the nice Afghan prisons we have heard about to do his time, the rotten sob. Fortunately, the cops have identified the goof and soon, very soon, the entire nation will know his name. You will recall the crap the dude who whizzed on the unknown soldier went through, well, I suggest that will be nothing in comparison to what's coming these a-holes way. PS How come the goof was released from custody with no conditions? This is a serious charge, I would think that at least a bail hearing would have to be conducted prior to release from custody, eh?

Ignorant cowards.... an apt description by a whizzed off father.
Assault leaves soldier with broken foot, nose Andrew Seymour The Ottawa Citizen
Tuesday, March 13, 2007
MORRISBURG - A Canadian soldier honoured for braving enemy fire in Afghanistan returned to the town where he grew up and found himself facing homegrown foes -- four men who beat him up in a Morrisburg bar and then taunted him about his hero status.
Master Cpl. Collin Fitzgerald, who was awarded a Medal of Military Valour for his heroic actions by Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean on Feb. 19, said witnesses told him one of his attackers said "what kind of f--king hero are you now" as he was being pulled off him.
Master Cpl. Fitzgerald had his foot broken in three places and needed 10 stitches to close a cut above his right eye. The 27-year-old soldier also suffered a broken nose, chipped tooth and black eye in the attack, which occurred just before 2 a.m. Saturday at Nick's Sports Bar.
He had only been in the bar about 30 minutes when he was struck from behind, he said yesterday from his home in Trenton.
"I don't even remember getting hit," he said. "I went and sat down at one of the tables, and next thing I knew I woke up and had a hole in my head and I couldn't walk on my foot," said Master Cpl. Fitzgerald, who is well-known in the small town of about 3,000 people. "I was just covered in blood. I didn't know what happened to me."
Prior to the assault, Master Cpl. Fitzgerald said he had been at the bar, shaking hands and accepting congratulations from old friends while visiting with Shawn Hitsman, the brother of his fiancee, Stacey.
After regaining consciousness, Master Cpl. Fitzgerald said Mr. Hitsman and another friend, Bobby Paradis, helped him up and drove him to a hospital.
OPP Const. Paul Murphy said yesterday a 21-year-old Morrisburg male has been charged with aggravated assault. He has since been released from custody on a promise to appear in court. Since he has yet to appear in court, his name was not released.
Const. Murphy said more charges are expected to be laid against the 21-year-old. Police also expect to lay charges against several other suspects, he said.
Mr. Paradis said a few minutes before the assault, Master Cpl. Fitzgerald had a verbal confrontation with another bar patron, but the matter appeared to be settled.
"That's where it escalated from," said Mr. Paradis, 25, who stepped between the two men who then went their separate ways.
Before heading to the bathroom, Mr. Paradis said he approached the man and told him Master Cpl. Fitzgerald wanted to buy him a beer.
"He said 'I'll go shake his hand then,' " said Mr. Paradis.
But a few minutes later, "somebody steps in and a few other guys took shots while he was down," said Mr. Paradis, who returned to find his friend on the floor. Mr. Paradis said he confronted the man who attacked Master Cpl. Fitzgerald, who told him he was aiding his friend.
Mr. Paradis, who only caught the tail end of the initial confrontation, said the argument appeared to be about Master Cpl. Fitzgerald "being a hero."
After serving eight months in Afghanistan, Master Cpl. Fitzgerald said "not in a million years" did he expect to be jumped in a Morrisburg bar. He also never expected to be shown such disrespect for his military service.
"Ignorance is bliss. They obviously have no idea or any clue what the hell is going on over there," said Master Cpl. Fitzgerald, who has also served two tours in Bosnia. "We weren't just sitting in a camp. We're getting shot at. People are dying. Buddies of mine I've seen get blown up. They really don't have any clue and they don't know how lucky they have it here in Canada," he said.
Master Cpl. Fitzgerald's mother, Arlene Fitzgerald, said the attack has left her outraged.
"He came home in one piece from Afghanistan, and he gets beaten up like this in his own home town," she said. "He wants to be in a fight like he wants a hole in the head. He just came back from hell," she said.
Master Cpl. Fitzgerald's father Bryan said he hopes the people responsible for the attack are punished.
"They have no respect for the military ... they have no respect for anybody," said Mr. Fitzgerald. "They are ignorant, they are cowards."
Master Cpl. Fitzgerald, who is a weapons instructor at CFB Trenton, was among the first recipients of the Canadian Medal of Military Valour.
According to the Canadian Forces, Master Cpl. Fitzgerald was recognized "for outstanding selfless and valiant actions" carried out on May 24, 2006, during an ambush "involving intense, accurate enemy fire."
Master Cpl. Fitzgerald, who said he has since learned the identity of the people accused of attacking him, said he had never met them before.
"The last thing I was doing in there was trying to provoke a fight with somebody. I'm not the type of guy to play pokey-chest with somebody and then sit down and turn my back to him," he said.
"It's in the hands of the police now, but there is nothing more than I would like to do is grab this guy and put him in the hospital for a couple of months," said Master Cpl. Fitzgerald. "I think I have a right to be pissed off about it."

Cowards beat Afghanistan hero unconscious By LAURA CZEKAJ, SUN MEDIA
A soldier who survived the dangers of Afghanistan and was awarded the Medal of Military Valour for his courageous actions there was seriously hurt Saturday after being jumped by cowardly thugs at a bar in his hometown of Morrisburg.
Master Cpl. Collin Fitzgerald, 27, and his fiancee, both Morrisburg natives, drove from their Trenton home Friday to visit his dad, Bryan, for his birthday.
Fitzgerald and his future brother-in-law decided to visit the local pub and were there until the early morning hours of Saturday.
At the bar, Fitzgerald bumped into a childhood friend who introduced him to patrons as a medal recipient and heroic soldier.
Fitzgerald sat down without his buddy and that's when he was hit in the head with something hard and sharp.
Knocked unconscious, Fitzgerald has no recollection of what happened next, but witnesses said four men jumped him from behind, kicking and punching him senseless.
"I woke up and I couldn't walk on my foot and my face was just gushing with blood," he said.
Fitzgerald was taken to the Winchester hospital where he received 10 stitches to his face, a cast for the three broken bones in his foot and was treated for other injuries.
Witnesses reported the men as saying something to the effect of "What kind of f-----g hero are you now?"
Police have charged a 21-year-old with aggravated assault. Witnesses have helped identify other suspects.
"I was kind of dumbfounded by the whole thing," he said. "I just kept trying to figure out in my head why this was happening. I just figured it was some kids trying to show off or something."

update... the low lifes name is Travis Baldwin, 21, of Morrisburg. Him mommy is blaming the victim.
Jr. B hockey defenceman charged in soldier's beatng Andrew Seymour, Ottawa Citizen Published: Tuesday, March 13, 2007
A rugged star defencemen for the Morrisburg Jr. B Lions hockey team has been identified as the man accused of attacking decorated Canadian soldier Collin Fitzgerald in a bar fight. Travis Baldwin, 21, was charged this week with aggravated assault after the 27-year-old Medal of Military Valour recipient suffered a broken foot, broken nose, and required 10 stitches to close a cut above his eye after being beaten up by four men in a sports bar in his hometown of Morrisburg. Following the beating, witnesses told Master Cpl. Fitzgerald one of the men said, "What kind of a f--king hero are you now' as he was being pulled off of him. Provincial police released Mr. Baldwin's name on Tuesday after confirming the charge had been processed by the court. When reached at his home, Mr. Baldwin declined to comment except to say the full story would come out in court. "I'm not supposed to say anything," he said. Witnesses said Master Cpl. Fitzgerald, who was awarded the medal on Feb. 19 by Gov.-Gen. Michaelle Jean for bravery under fire in Afghanistan, had been in a verbal confrontation with another bar patron shortly before he was attacked. However, witnesses said the disagreement seemed to have been resolved before Master Cpl. Fitzgerald was beaten up.

A Canadian soldier awarded the Medal of Military Valour for selfless and valiant service in Afghanistan was badly beaten up at a sports bar in his Ontario hometown last weekend.
Master Cpl. Collin Fitzgerald says he was attacked from behind and knocked unconscious by four men early Saturday in Morrisburg, southeast of Ottawa.
What exactly happened at the bar is still under investigation.
Fitzgerald said he arrived around 1:30 a.m. and bumped into an old childhood friend who started introducing the decorated soldier to strangers, telling them Fitzgerald was a war hero.
At some point, he sat down at a table, he said.
"The next thing I knew, I got hit with some object and I was down, and the next thing I knew was being picked up off the ground and people were telling me I had to get to the hospital because I had a big gash in my head," Fitzgerald told CBC News.
Fitzgerald, 27, required 10 stitches to close a wound across his brow. He also suffered a broken nose, a gash in his head, two chipped teeth, three fractures in his foot and a swollen knee. three days after the attack, his right eye is swollen nearly shut. The other is bruised black, red and yellow.
The people who attacked him were complete strangers, he said.
"I've never met these guys before that night."
Fitgzerald was decorated for valour in February by Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean after he helped save the lives of some of his platoon mates while under intense enemy fire during an ambush in Afghanistan last May.
Fitzgerald said it was obvious his attackers had some kind of problem with him and probably didn't think much of his service overseas either.
"I don't think they realize the things we went through over there," he said.
Travis Baldwin, 21, of Morrisburg, has been charged with aggravated assault. Police say they are considering charges against three other men.
Baldwin's mother told CBC News on Tuesday that Fitzgerald has blown the incident out of proportion and misrepresented himself as an innocent victim. She said Fitzgerald and his friends were the ones who provoked her son and the other men.
