Two sons to a bear? I seem to recall something about that, in fact, I think they sent a company from london up to pet to help with the search. Was that the same incident?

Hi Ron and Mike
Nooooo you got it wrong. It was a Halfkenny but it was Daves brother. The reason I'm sure is because I was posted to the same job the following year.

Heres the story about the bears and the Halfkenny Boys 12 and 15 at the time
Very very sad Occured in Algonquin Park It was May 13, 1978, when four teenagers entered the park from the east side. They drove along a dirt logging road looking for a place to fish. Richard Rhindress, 18, was the oldest of the party. Perhaps by coincidence, he was the only one who survived to tell the story.
Richard and his 16-year-old brother, Billy, went into the park to go fishing. They took along two younger friends, George and Mark Halfkenny (15 and 12 years old). They stopped several times, trying out various streams. At about 5:30 that afternoon they arrived at Stone Creek. While the others went off to fish, Richard stayed in the car and had a nap. It was a nap that probably saved his life.
An hour later he awoke in the early evening light to find himself alone. He called. No answer. He honked the horn. Still, no response.
Thinking his friends might have wandered up the road he drove the backwoods in search of them. Finally, in the fading light, he walked along the edge of the creek, yet he found no sign of them.
By this time he was well and truly concerned. He drove back to the Petawawa Canadian Forces Base where their fathers were stationed. A search party was organized-250 men searched the area on foot with helicopter support. It took 48 hours before they found the boys.
They found George first. George had stuffed four fish into his pants and was walking along the trail when a black bear ambushed him. George may have put up a fight, there were signs of a struggle, but a young boy has little chance against a determined bear. After he killed George, the bear dragged his body upstream and hidden. Apparently the other two boys blundered onto the scene completely unaware of their friend's fate. They too were ambushed and killed.
The bear was still feeding on the boys when the rescuers discovered their bodies. Although it ran away, it soon returned and was quickly shot.
Just awful thought others might be curious of the story If any find this offensive or inapproriate PM me and I will remove it

Here is a story about the following year. It was summer time and I was told I was going to Petawawa for the summer to run a course for the PMQ kids 13 - 17. When I got there I reported to Capt RAG's Duncan. He told me all about the BEAR incident the year before and I asked him for three FN C1's and some ammo. He agreed and I went my way. I joined the course and we all went to the Boy Scouts Camp. There was 21 on the course, 11 boys and 10 girls. The subjects we covered were bivi routine, trapping small animals, rappelling, white water canoeing etc.
Well the second day came and left and I still didn't have my ammo. By day three after seeing a bear, I sent a message to RAG's and told him about the bear and I hadn't told the kids about the BEAR but I might tell them if I didn't get my ammo. (The young Gen Christie's daughter was on the course) Well the MCpl gave him the message and I got my ammo. On parents day Gen Christie asked me how it was going? I said "just fine Sir".
Just one thing about Geoff's story, didn't the Halfkenny's have some fish on their person? Story goes they had some fish in their small packs.

In the Readers Digest story the investigators found bear prints along the same area, which they thought indicated the bear did its fishing there..it was ,as they said just an unlucky choice of fishing areas. Conservationists then went o to say to all people ,to check out an area you might find to fish ,and if any bear prints.. YOU move somewher else.. the bear apparently wont, as long as it gets good fishing at that spot...ranrad
