Man alive, i see the great side of this tho.. that this lady has the courage and conviction to do what is not only right ,but legal... that is more than we can say for our Gov.Are they soon to be done the reviews of the reviews of the reviews? ? Do the right thing.. give this lady what she is owed, she asks for nothing more, how in the name of decency can you keep stalling on her??? ranrad

Tories hold up committee delving into Afghan human rights

OTTAWA — A House of Commons committee probe into the events surrounding the release of a highly-censored report on human rights in Afghanistan was held up Thursday by Conservative MPs, who for talked out the clock for hours.
The Tory filibuster finally broke after five hours and the witnesses were allowed to speak around 2 p.m.
The meeting of the House of Commons access to information and ethics committee was the second in a row to feature Tory MPs talking at length about procedural minutia to avoid delving into the committee's scheduled work.
The Conservatives were arguing that the opposition failed to give them enough notice for the study and that such a review raises concerns about revealing official secrets.
The opposition pushed for the probe following a recent Globe and Mail report showing how the government initially denied the existence of a report on Afghan human rights conditions, then released a heavily censored version. The Globe then obtained an uncensored version of the report which showed the government had blacked out sections that could be politically embarrassing to the government.
The committee was scheduled to hear today from University of Ottawa law professor Amir Attaran and independent journalist Jeff Esau, both of whom had filed requests for the human rights report under Canada's Access to Information legislation.

The federal government is set to restore citizenship to thousands of people known as the Lost Canadians, the minister of Citizenship and Immigration said Tuesday.
Diane Finley announced she'll be creating a new law to help people who were born in this country, or born to Canadian parents, and who lost their Canadian status because of little-known quirks of the 1947 Citizenship Act.

"These proposals would resolve the issue of citizenship for most of those people whose status is currently in question," said Finley, who testified at a parliamentary hearing in Ottawa.
"They would also eliminate onerous and confusing retention requirements and make sure these situations would not happen in [the] future."
Finley said her amendment will restore citizenship to most of the nine different categories of so-called Lost Canadians.
But the major exceptions are the War Babies — illegitimate children of Canadian soldiers who were born abroad during the Second World War.
The new law cannot include them because there's an ongoing court case, she said.
Investigation reveals problems
Finley's department has been under criticism since January 2007, when a CBC News investigation reported that the obscure provisions could affect more than 200,000 people — including those who have lived in Canada most of their lives.
The problem has cropped up for many who had no idea they were not officially Canadians.
In some cases, Canadian-born children lost their citizenship because their fathers later became U.S. citizens.
Under the law of the time, those whose fathers took out citizenship in another country automatically lost their Canadian citizenship as well, even if they weren't living with the fathers at the time.
Some people born in U.S. hospitals, even just across the border, were deemed not to be citizens unless they later registered as Canadians.
Another rule, from 1947 to 1977, required people who were living outside the country on their 24th birthdays to sign a form to keep their citizenship.
Although the government says it is aware of about 450 cases of people who have lost their citizenship, the CBC investigation found that much larger numbers could find themselves caught up in the 1947 law.
The problem became more obvious as the United States began requiring passports for everyone entering the country by air, causing many Canadians to apply for passports.
Instead of a passport in the mail, some received a letter saying they are not Canadian.
Others discover they are not Canadian citizens when they reach the age to apply for Old Age Security.
Don Chapman, who has been leading the charge to change Canada's Citizenship Act, said the announcement is a good start.
"Oh, this is a jump forward, there's no doubt about it. There are still some things that need to be addressed, but yes, we are starting down the road of a much better path than we were."
But NDP MP Bill Siksay said the War Babies exception is not acceptable.
"It's very problematic since those are some of the most compelling of the cases we've heard, so I know we are going to be looking for solutions for some of those folks."
