Lift now... well done!

Soldiers compete in weightlifting competition
Posted By SEAN CHASE

Soldiers competed Friday to see who could lift the heaviest weights and earn the title of champion.

The fourth annual Bench Press Competition was held at Dundonald Hall.

Fifteen competitors tried their hand at matching or beating past records.

Sgt. Norm Godin, of First Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, won the heavyweight classification pressing 365 pounds.

Initially the only entry in that classification, he was challenged by Master Cpl. Brent Williamson, who had won the middleweight class. The 207-pound soldier, who is with the National Support Element, had first tried to bench press 375 pounds. However, he couldn't match Sgt. Godin's mark.

Last year's record was 400 pounds.

To qualify or win, the lifter must hold the weight in position for two seconds once it is lifted from the rack. The weight must then be lowered to touch the chest before it is pushed up for full extension.

The winner of the lightweight class was Cpl. Mike Bailey, also from 1 RCR, who lifted 280 pounds.

He trained for three week in preparation for his first competition. "It was the most I've lifted in my life," said the 169-pound infantryman. "It was my own personal best."

In the women's open classification, Pte. Sharon Langlois bench pressed 180 pounds. It was also her inaugural competition.

This year, five woman competed compared to just one in 2007.

"I didn't even know I could lift 180," she said noting she did very little training ahead of time. "I just go to the gym a lot and train at work."

The event, hosted by Personnel Support Programs, was moved from the front lobby to the gym where organizers hoped to attract more spectators.

Fitness instructor Carole Groleau said the competition gives the soldiers the chance to participate in something different from marathons or obstacle courses.

"Here, we're looking at their strength and technique," she said. "It challenges them to lift properly. It's something they are not use to (in the weight room)."

This is the first of several major competitions at the base. The Cross Base Challenge, consisting of a mixture of running and bike riding, will be held on June 12. The 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Ironman Competition is slated for Sept. 12.
