Just a question but is it time we restrict posting to members only?
I for one am getting tried of some of the crap (spam) being posted here as I suspect the moderators are also when they have to deal with it.
There have been many good posts by guests who would most likey join if required to post.
Most of the spam is computer generated and membership helps prohibit these. Certain steps can be put in place to restrict computers joining the membership.
Just a thought. I don't want to restrict the great posts by most guests but some of this smut is going too far. I am sure the moderaters also are getting sick of dealing with it. These steps are unlikely to stop the spam but certainly should slow it down some.

Sounds like a good idea. I dont know what it takes for that. Or if it can even be done. Then there is the problem of legitimate guests being eliminated as well. I guess this has to go to the folks who look after all the legal end of things. But an idea, ranrad

I will give the option of requiring member activation by a Moderator some thought.  As the principal Moderator of the forum since Cpl Watters' departure, this basically means my doing it, either from home or from work.  As I am also a Moderator on another very busy board with over 10,000 accounts, I know that any increases to traffic will often mean an increased likelihood of unwelcome interaction from automated or human trolls, and a concurrent increase in the demands on forum staff to monitor and manage the tone and content of the forum.

I'm not sure that is such a good idea. We have a lot of guest traffic, indeed, many Royal Canadians have not registered but still frequent the board quite often. Just ignore the dross until the moderator glitches it....

Not suggesting that you have to be a member to view. Just to post. Lets face it, it's not a big process to join. Maybe we can keep some of the BS off the forum & save the mods some trouble.

Hi everyone:

Regarding spam, it's a pain in the you know were Cry and I hate spam. I operated a group on MSN. I spent every other day deleting and banning false members for posting spam. It's a tough job and it's worse when there is a open forum. All I can suggest is ignore it and allow the moderator to remove it at his/her appropriate time. Even where I work, our own company can not control the spam... I get really p----ed when I come off holidays and have to sift through a s--t load of email to seperate the spam from legal mail. Sorry I swore. I never was a kind insurance adjuster.  Angry

Although spam is not as pervasive on this site as other forums, I would agree posting priviledges should be "members only".

Regt Adjt, I would have no problem assisting you in reviewing current posts for spam. I've been an IT techie at MTS Allstream a number of years now, and am basically "online" practically 24/7 (I work overnight shifts).  Night shifts are slow and have plenty of free time.  Just let me know.

Perhaps some sort of password issued to the membership could help, i don't know something that only a Royal or close affiliate would know.   Question , answer sort of thing ie: ? how many battle honours on the colours - A: 25.  just a sugestion!   Myself, i have not really crossed to much spam here however there are others on here a whole lot more than myself.    Pro Patria

PS:  I have seen a number of individuals (whom i served with), on this board signed on as guests they should be able to identify and answer a question on Regimental history or know where to get the answer.  This sounds kind of simple, maybe it will work.

Hi,

Well, this can be a touhg nut to crack.  I do agree with Mike in the fact that there are a lot of Royals that have not registered but do post here occasionally. I feel we do not want to discourage this practice. Yes, it would be great if everyone registered, but until everyone gets comfortable and used to this , it may take time.
In the mean time, I think maybe the Regt Adjt can take the kind offer of members like 75Bravo-ADP to assist in deleting spam etc.
At least for a bit until this gets out more and we encourage more members to register.
Just my thought.

It has become apparent that the spammers have the capability to bypass the registration requirement.  For the past few weeks, unregistered guests could only search and read the forum, and could not post new topics or replies to existing threads.  Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to stop all of the spam postings.  I am also not sure if the automated registration is working, it has been two weeks since our last member joined. It would appear that with a simple forum system such as the one we are using there is no way to have a completely secure system.

For now, I am going to return permission for unregistered guests to post topics while I reconsider how best to approach this.

Regt Adjt: Maybe its time you enlist a few more members to help you remove the obvious spam? Not moderators but sort of spam cops. If the spam disapears quickly maybe they will find its not worth the trouble.

Sir: I do not profess to understand how these sites are run , monitored ,protected ,etc. I do know that i myself use a thing called Spam Fighter ,which works on the premise that as members report Spam ,it is registered and stopped trhuout the network of millions who are on SpamFighter and blocks that Spam ,thruout the network, on every users computer.Just thought i would pass that on.. i believe there is also a commercial version for websoperators, at a cost of course, but i think it is fairly cheap. For all, the personal use Spam Fitghter is FREE and works great, mainly because of the way it works. as i described above.. ranrad

Gents, spam postsings on message boards are somewhat dirfferent from those that land in your mailboxes.  There isn't a "spamfighter" equivalents, as least not for a system as simple as this one.  Also, the spam will normally be generated by automatic systems that don't notice or care how fast or how often the posts get deleted.  Other than moving to a more advanced forum system, we're pretty much stuck with a certain amount of it as we have seen, because the one similarity it does have to e-mail spam is the diligence of the spam programmers to find ways to work through available means to minimize their effectiveness.
