I have another question, my father Alfred Goode was a Motorcycle Courier during WW2 in France. What division would he have been under, Motor Div. or maybe Postal or something like that. What make of bike did they use, my guest would be a Vincent or Indian with the side shift lever on the tank & the spark advance & throtle on the handle bars. Does anybody know where i can copy a photo of the army bikes. I know you have heard this before, my father never talked much about the war but in the small town where i grew up there was a lot of vet's that told me stories. One of the vet's knew my father in France & told me that my father did some stunt showes with his bike to entertain the boys. He got shot in the arm & side swiped by a bus but he was one of the lucky ones, he made it home. His brother Arnold in Italy did not.

My uncle rode a bike in WWII. He was an MP... heres a picture of him on his motorcycle... check out who he's escorting. Wish I could be of more assistance but at least we can see what kind of bike they were riding. Question is, what is it?

Thats an interesting photo, the bike looks like a Norton, looks like Winston Churchhill in the limo, i could be wrong.

Great pic and info. Im sure its Eisenhower... very interesting stuff...as a side info .i am surethere is a site of motorcycle outfits of WW2 but cant think of a name or addy right now.. will see if i can "Jog ' it up for you..ranrad

The last post link is my father, it's very possiable that he was a dispatch rider. I have his war letters & telegrams here, some is from Aldershot, London, France & he sent one from the Salvation Army. I took a quick look at that last link, it look's interesting. My father was from Nova Scotia then to Stanstead Quebec. Thanks

Mike B, the picture of your uncle has sparked great interest amongst CProC Veterans in the area. Is it possible to get a copy of this picture suitable for mounting? The curator at the MP Heriatge Hall here at Borden would like to have it displayed along with related info on your Uncle and the event depicted in the picture, if possible.
As for the motorcycle, I've shown the picture to a WWII Veteran CProC motorcycle driver who tells me, given the seal beam head light, the canvass windshield, the tool box location on the front fender and the position style of the handle bars (amougst other features), the machine is most likely to be a 1945-Harley Davidson.
As for your Uncle, he may have been a member of the CProC infamous
"Out Riders" Group. The "Out Riders" were CProC motorcyle drivers assigned to Army HQs to provide the 1st Canadian Army Commander - General Crerar with escort and close protection during his visits to the front lines.

Well. this is interesting.
As many of you have noted, the VIP in the car was in fact Dwight Eisenhower. If memory serves me correct, the picture was taken in the streets of Paris during the liberation parade. I may be wrong, of course, as I was pretty young when my grandmother...
I can help you out, however, as Uncle Lawrence, now in his eighties, is still alive an living in the Oshawa area. I'll call my mom, she speaks with him often, and ask her to fill us in.... as for the picture, what you see is what I have, Mon Ami. Perhaps if you save it to disc and have someone who has a knack with photoshop, ie, Mr Hickson, play with it, you can get a presentable copy for display.

PS... OK, just talked to my mom, she will phone Uncle Lawrence and get back to me. He is 84 now, went to war when he was eighteen and did not come home till it was done. My mom is pretty sure the picture is in Paris on the event of Eisenhower's arrival but she will confirm. His name, BTW, is Lawrence Hogan and he enlisted in Timmins, Ontario... more to follow... over...

The last RCR dispatch rider I remember was on exercise in Petawawa in 1961. Every company had one. I was in Delta Coy 1 RCR and the DR was Grady Bonner, who I havent heard about in quite a while. The last time I saw Grady is when we served together as instructors in Cornwallis in 1972. The bike he rode was either a BSA or a Triumph. Just as a point of interest, when they closed out 27 Central Ordnance Depot in London a lot of things were offered for bidding by the public. I think one of the listings was for 50 Dispatch Motorcycles still in the box . I seem to remember someone bought the lot for about 100 bucks each..Does anyone remember that? Rick Rankine

I had a brother who was a DR 1961 to 1964 with Sigs Pl. I had a DR Crse in 1964 in Germany and the Bikes we used were 500cc Triumph with a 650cc transmission.

Geof... Pretty sure it is Paris, not Ottawa. He did not remain in the military after the war. Mom remembers him speaking about the French ladies after the liberation and on all the trouble the lads were getting in on leave. Regardless, he must have been doing one hell of a job to get chosen for such a plum assignment.
I bet the lads in Afghanistan wish they had such a place to head off to blow off some steam, eh? Almost make a man want to learn how to speak French!

Mike i did find a reference where Ike was in Ottawa and Toronto in 1946 for a ticker tape parade
and would of been in uniform. I couldn't see the film footage.
