This is for Mike , ranrad and others who have been asking for moreof this type of material. Just a short one.
Was thinking yesterday of different things ( as I do from time to time) and the following thought reoccured. One day while in the attack mode on German forces in Italy we were moving on and heading toward our objective. Jerry used to use a lot of 3" Morter fire as well as 88 mm support fire sometimes when he felt he needed it. Please bare in mind that we were not called the RED PATCH DEVILS for nothing. However this one particular day, we attacked and moved well ahead toward the enemy and entering his defences when he opened up with 88's and he started to shell the hell out of us, fortunately I spotted a slit trench that Jerry had dug for his protection which was about 3 feet deep, I dived into it, followed by two more right behind me and as we crouched down to avoid stray pieces of shrapnel, another guy took a dive into our slit trench head first, like diving into a swimming pool, and laid flat over all three us. This lasted for about 5 minutes, with none of us getting hurt, especially the guy on top. There were a lot of silly things like this during the war but are to numerous to mention. Will pass more on If I can think of them.
