Hi Gerry It's Lt Col Ray Elliston A Soldier and a Gentleman, he was a real top leader and friend quite involve in the Miramichi branch RCR Association, however he was not the last base commander Lt Col VanWill was a supply teck which started of with the Royals in the early sixties as a private. Now I can Place you it was during the time I was trying to get all my little bobos fix before my release 1996 in prep for a medical pension. You look like a very sharp Royal on that parade. Yes Aldore, yer right; Mr. Eliston was second to last; I'm not sure, but his RSM was one of the Family; I'm thinking John Marr was it, but not sure. Now for a good laugh: notice the wing right behind me? Received my CD, took a step backward (DRIVING the foot of course!) Did my salute; proper right turn, an' nearly decapitated myself off the wing...we all had a good laugh ; ...was commented on my outstanding drill though LOL
PS Aldore, I have some photos of the last airshow for Base Chatham; will post when I can find 'em

Nice picture Jerry. Yes, I do remember CFB Chatham very well. Not a bad posting. It was difficult to adjust to the AirForce way and their relax ways. But once you were adapted, it was a good thing. There were a few ex Royals there when I got there in 87. Loius Picot, Randy Bennet, Mike Coffey, with whom I had a tussle with in the Jr ranks. But all in all, not bad. I remember how I was commented on the shine on my boots and my pressed uniform all the time. My peers were nervous because the thought that they would have to follow suite. They should have anyhow. You wear the uniform with pride and diginity. Pro Patria.

Mike Coffey, with whom I had a tussle with in the Jr ranks. - hey Dennis, why doesn't that surprise me? (Heard about that when I got to Chatham, didn't know it was you) I went through cornholis, basic and was in Duke's with Mike for awhile before he went to echo. I too tipped a few with yourself in the mess when I got there summer of '90. I didn't have too much adjustment to do for Chatham (well, had some involvement with the MP's there, but never charged): spent my first 2 years after remustering at a navy base (Stadecona) before Chatham. NOW that was an adjustment. Everyone at Stade hospital thought I was stuck up but a hard worker( ie, discipline: Yes Sir, No Sir, Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am, Yes PO, No PO; well get the picture). After the first 'bosses night' at the junior mess / 'Slackers', well let's say one the ol' infantry motos kicked in: Play Hard, Party Hard - some of us got called into the unit CO's office or Chief's the following monday about doing carriere landings (playing the Bonnie / HMCS Bonaventure) on the long table with beer bottles while the CO was sitting at the end of the table with her 'entourge' ( Some people just don't have a sense of humour ). good thing some of our snr med a's spent time with the infantry & airborne . (THEY thought it was quite hilourous). Ah well....

Hello Gerry, You mentioned that the Base RSM was a Royal Canadian, but couldn't remember his name. I can help out. It was CWO Steve Douglas. He was an outstanding soldier. You may remember, he ran the Shoot-To-Live, and winter warfare refresher training for the Base, utilizing the Range Control Staff as instructors. I count Chatham as one of the highlights of my career. Ray Elliston

Yes! thanx Mr. Elliston, CWO Douglas (good man) - was driving me nuts trying to remember his name. Didn't get to particpate with the shoot-to-live and such on the base as I was technically posted as Bty medic for 119, so I 'partied' with them for the 2 X10, gun ranges, exercises, etc in Gagetown, Wainwright (RV92) and yearly trip to Suffield for ADATS firing. I too count Chatham as one of my best postings; meet niiner domestic there. Planning to return to Roberville,Bathurst area, (wife's home town) as soon as she completes her IE here in Spet Iles Que (summer 2010); nice place here ( cool right now with XX snow) looking forward though to returning to NB as I'm starting to think I'm the only 'anglo square head' here in town LOL
